CAPTION: Queen Patty Szymoniak received her sash from Onaway High School's 1976 homecoming queen, Lee Ann Smith. Patty's escort was Tom Haire. Leading up to the moment, there was a bonfire and snake dance after the junior-varsity game. The school-hall decorations were judged and there was a parade of floats through downtown. The coaching staff and players also rode in the parade. The pride of the north, the Marching Cardinals, under the direction of Karan Pregitzer, opened halftime activities at the field. "Play your Cards for the future," was the theme. When all was said and done, people in town were talking about how the Cardinals vanquished a strong Class A team from the Soo. The Big Red Machine was an underdog heading into the contest, according to area sports' prophets, but came away with the most exciting victory of the season 24-23. Roger Domke scored the game-winning two-point conversion. Minutes before, he scored on an 84-yard touchdown run. The cheer from the crowd could be heard in Bay City, the paper stated.
