From Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook May 2, 2019 |
CAPTION: Three cheers for Onaway multiplied by 10 is what people heard within shouting
distance of the Onaway cheerleading squad tryouts. There were 16 open positions for
varsity and junior varsity for the 1979-80 school year, there was not going to be any
trouble finding girls to fill them, according to cheerleading coach Colleen Whitsitt.
"We've got more girls trying out this year than ever before, "Whitsitt said of the 30
high school girls who were hopeful to lead the rah-rah-rahs at next season's sporting
events. The final judging was going to be open to the public. Eight varsity cheerleaders
from grades 11th and 12th and eight junior varsity squad members from grades ninth and
10th were going to be chosen by eight judges.
