CAPTION: It's been 50 years since members of the Onaway Area Community Schools board of education sold the old high school building. The board conducted a special meeting to open three bids. The top bidder was Ernest Koronka in the amount of $2,850. It included 28 lots at the site. Superintendent JOhn L. Hollander and Straits Salvage Company offered to tear the building down and remove it for salvage value and made no offer on theland. Elzy Brewbaker offered a bid of $1,000. Koronka had not indicated what he was going to do with the building. The boaard put no stipulations on the purchase that it had to be razed. It was vacated in 1963 when the new building was put into use. Students had to haul their desks and chairs up the hill during Christmas break to start classes in January. There was an effort to find a renter, preferably an employer that would have offered jobs, but that did not work out.
