CAPTION: There was a devastating fire in downtown Onaway 70 years ago. It started in the kitchen of Merritt
Restaurant along State Street at around 4 a.m. and spread to Guile's Drug Store and John Robert's office. Fred
Butler of the Onaway Bakery noticed it as a small blaze. He went to wake up Mr. and Mrs. Burrison and three
children who were in apartments above the building, but they already were aware of the fire. The building was
a mass of flames by the time firefighters arrived on the scene. Crews focused on saving the adjoining Liepshield
building, which escaped damage.
