Caption: A snowy scene from Onaway's early days.
This week's photo was taken from the intersection of State Street, Washington Avenue and Maple Street. It
shows the north side of state Street looking east.
The Onaway Light and Power Company is the first building on the left. This building was later used by Presque
Isle Electric Cooperative and was Peterman's Garage at one time before becoming Chagnon Funeral Home. It
may have had some other handles as well.
Prior to 1900, Merritt Chandler had his general store and the Onaway post office on this location.
The next building is the Swigart Land Company advertising farmland for sale. This building later became
Mahoney Hardware Store.
One can see the Standard Oil Station and the Red Crown Gas sign. Looking closely you see a lot of people
and horses in front of the Colonial Hotel.
