CAPTION: The year was 1977 and Rita Kleiber was the new postmaster in Millersburg. Of eight
eligible applicants, she was the only woman to apply and got the job. Kleiber had worked for
the post office for 15 years, five of which were in her hometown of Hawks as acting postmaster.
She was a lifetime resident of Hawks, graduating from Rogers City High School. Her husband, John,
was a carpenter with Lakeside Improvement Company of Rogers City. In other Onaway news, the new
St. Paul Catholich Church Community hall was well on its way to completion. A groundbreaking
ceremony took placce in July and the building was going to be in use by November. It was closed in
so there was no concern for bad weather. Members of St. Paul Parish had considered construction of
such a facility for a few years before the project began. The building committee decided that to
delay any further would only increase costs.
