CAPTION: Presque Isle County undersheriff Duane Badder was appointed sheriff for the remainder of 1978.
A committee made up of county prosecutor Larry Farmer, clerk Ruth Doyle and probate judge Charles
Menefee recommended the appointment following the resignation of sheriff Ray Kurczewski.  Badder, 45,
was born and raised in Midland and graduated from Midland High School in 1952.  After completing high
school, Badder served in the U.S. Navy for four years.  Badder moved to Onaway where he owned and operated
a hardware business for 10 years.  He then worked as a county building official for 18 months before
being appointed undersheriff in January 1977.
