JACOB GRIMES DEAD

Another of the Pioneers has passed to the Great Beyond.

Sanilac County Times of Feb 15, 1907

A life of usefulness and honor was finished on Wednesday at noon when Jacob Grimes, of Peck, passed to "that bourne from which no traveler returns," after a long life of earnest endeavor in this world, but more particularly in Speaker township and Peck, where he spent the greater part of his life.

Mr. Grimes was born in England March 18, 1830, and lived in his native land until after obtaining his majority, coming to Canada when just past 21 years of age. A few years later he was married to his first wife, Miss Hannah Smith, shortly after coming to Speaker township where he cleared up a farm and lived for over thirty years, then coming to Peck and building the grist mill about 14 years ago.

A number of years after coming to Speaker township his first wife died and 28 years ago he was married to Emily Cork, the sorrowing wife who survives him.

The deceased was known for his honest principles and every man who ever had any dealings with him always received his just due. He was a hard working man and by his own effort had amassed considerable property and while he had disposed of his mill interests some time ago on account of failing health, he still had considerable other property.

He was the oldest member of the M.E. Church on the Peck charge and was a true Christian in all that the word implies, and a man who always did what he thought right regardless of the personal opinion of any person.

He was one of the men that his or any other country may well feel proud of and only for the works of such noble pioneers as he this country would not occupy the place that is does. He was generous to a fault and we are told that no man ever left his door hungry. During his life he would visit the humblest homes and liberally shower comforts upon the poor, the sick and the hungry, remembering that Bible injunction: - :He that giveth to the poor lendeth to the Lord."

During his seven years of failing health his wife and family have done all in their power to make his declining years as pleasant as possible, and he died peacefully of old age, knowing that he had had every attention possible from his family.

He leaves to mourn his loss eleven children, seven by his first and four by his second wife, namely James W., Peck: George, Speaker: Emma and Jennie, Holland Michigan: Nancy Brainard, Minnesota: Sexton, Water Valley Miss: Charles, Youngstown Ohio: Frances, Chicago: and Herbert, Arthur and Grace at home and also his widow.

The funeral will be held from the M.E. Church , Peck, on Saturday afternoon, Rev Bean officiating, after which the remains will be laid to rest in Speaker Cemetery .
