Using Census Records

Federal census schedules were taken every ten years. Early federal census records named only heads of household, while later records listed more members of each household by name.

Michigan also took state censuses for legislative apportionment. For St. Joseph County, surviving state census material is limited, but the available years can help fill gaps left by missing federal records.
