Looking for any information about our ancestor, James Samuel DONAHUE.  He was the lighthouse keeper at South Haven Lighthouse after his Civil War service (wounded and discharged in 1864) and up till his retirement in 1894.  We know very little about him or his wife, Anna, except what you see
written here.
We do have a large, handwritten record book from the South Haven Lighthouse (from 1888 to 1892) that contains information about daily lighthouse activities, as well as his retirement watch from the State of Michigan and the keys to the actual lighthouse.
Our interest would be birth, death records, census info, etc.  Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.  Thanks!!!   Susan Donahue

I would like more information and/or contact with the descendant's of: Sawyer SMITH - who died 17 Aug 1882 at South Haven, Van Buren Co, MI.  On the GENDIS it makes mention that he was aged 67 and widowed - a farmer - his father Amos SMITH & mother Polly SMITH <probably no nee was given on the record> -
The reason I am seeking information in Van Buren Co. is because I have a gr. gr. uncle by the name of Allen <Amos on marriage record> who married in Bangor on 5 Jul 1886 but was a resident at the time of his marriage in South Haven - Allen SMITH married Emma E. HENDERSON there and later they moved back to where his family lived in Allegany Co., NY, I have the parent's of my Allen SMITH -but am trying to figure out the lineage through his father's siblings.  The only reason I can figure that my gr. uncle went to Michigan was if he had family there to stay with.  If any of the above means anything to you please
contact me.   Thank you!

I'm searching for my link to Almon OLDS (Birth/Death date unknown) of Hartford.  He was the son of John Bissell OLDS (1796-1873) who was one, if not, the first residents of the area cia 1837.  My link is Russell E. OLDS my father, son of Walter E. OLDS, son of Almon OLDS.  I know of one brother to Walter, who was Authur OLDS of Hartford (I think).  Almon was, as I have been told, a Major in the Union Army during the Civil War.  Are there brothers and sisters to Almon, and who were they married to and when?
John Bissell OLDS was son of Robert OLDS III, a Revolutionary War soldier. This link may be important to anyone tracing their link for qualifying to join such organizations as the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Please E-mail to me any information you have concerning OLDS family
Thank you for the help you may be able to give me.

David DOPP at 47 years of age, is in the 1850 Van Buren County census, Lawrence township, along with several children.  His daughter, Alzina, age 1, is my greatgrandmother.  He was born in New York, but I have nothing further than him.
Also in the same census is Sylvanus CATE, age 24, in Lawrence township.  His son Edgar (actually George Edgar, I think) is my great-grandfather.  Edgar and Alzina were married in Van Buren County, and then moved to Oklahoma.  However, their daughter Ethel Zulene CATE was born in Michigan according to the OK 1900 census.
I'd appreciate any clues as to the backgrounds of David DOPP and Sylvanus CATE.

Seeking more information on "Jennett HIGHT."  Listed below is current data which has been published in my The Descendants of William DEWEY (July, 1998).  Am especially interested in tracing the children of
Jennett and Gideon (Barzillia King Dewey, Juliaett Elizabeth Dewey, Henry Augustus Dewey, Susan Ann Dewey and John William Dewey), all of whom settled in Michigan, late 19th century.
 Descendants of Jewitt/Jennett Hight

Generation No. 1

1.  JEWITT/JENNETT2 HIGHT  (WILLIAM1)1 was born July 29, 1820 in Bradford, NY2, and died April 1, 1874 in Lawton, Van Buren Co., MI3.  She married GIDEON DEWEYII4 January 12, 18415, son of GIDEON DEWEY and JOANNA ALLEN.

Notes for JEWITT/JENNETT HIGHT:
Resident of Steuben Co., NY at time of marriage (AMD). Her name has been variously misspelled:  "Jane Haight" [Exhibit B] or "Jeanette" (the 1850 Charleston Twp. Federal Census), or "Jennett Hight" as compiled by AMD.  Another authoritative source is the Genealogical Death Index of Michigan
which lists her as "Jewitt Dewey."  However, it is very possible that this spelling may be the result of illegible handwriting and/or a transcription error.  Two of her grandchildren were recorded (AMD) as
"Jennett." She died at age 55 of typhoid fever.  Her parents' residence  is listed as Mattawan, MI which would suggest that they removed to Michigan from Bradford, Steuben Co., NY. It appears that Jennett, her parents,  and most of her children were settled in Michigan within a year of Gideon's death.

More About JEWITT/JENNETT HIGHT:
Occupation: Farmers wife

Notes for GIDEON DEWEYII:
The "History of Tioga County," R. C. Brown & Co. (1897) lists "In 1819...Gideon Dewey in the Dartt settlement..."  The "History of Tioga County," by Munsell & Co., lists Gideon as having originally settled in Dartt Settlement and was one of only 50 taxpayers in 1821.  Lived on Reese Hill, near Wellsboro, PA. Paid taxes in 1861 [Assessment Book, Charleston Twp., Tioga County, PA..."3 acres wild land, 2 cows, yoke stags...taxes, .47").  He appointed Hugh McInroy as estate administrator in his will (Wills Administration, Tioga County, PA: Gideon Dewey/dcd/Hugh McInroy/adm/letters/664/1865/B/p. 436).
The Family Letter lists 8 children born to Gideon and Lucy, while AMD lists 10.  However, AMD provides additional information (marriages and children) on all but the two who are not listed in the letter (Ann and
Betsey).  It is very possible, then, that these two girls died in infancy, thus,  their omission from the Family Letter [see Exhibit B].  By the time of the 1850 Census none of the children of Lucy were living
in the Gideon household.

I'm researching the family of Samuel LUTZ. according to the 1850 census he lived in Ganges Allegan county.  and in the 1860 census he was listed as living in Casco, Allegan County. Then in 1854 he married Ann Elisabeth RICE in Van Buren County.
In 1861 he inlisted in the Civil War at Van Buren County. He was discharged in Texas in 1865. Samuel and Elisabeth LUTZ had four known children. FRANK C. LUTZ born 1859. Samuel C. LUTZ born 1862 Emma J. LUTZ born 1866 and Rose  W. LUTZ born 1869.  The LUTZ family may have lived in Casco, but because the court house in South Haven was closer that's where I found his marriage records. According to the Wills and Probate records, also found in South Haven, Elisabeth LUTZ died Mar. 1882 and Samuel LUTZ died Sept. 1882. Is there any one out there that can shed some light on this family? I would like to find out where my Great grand parent's are buried so that I may sometimes get a chance to visit their graves. thanks in advance for any and all help.

John A. ARMSTRONG married Eunice DOLPH in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan in 1852. I knew she was buried in Schoolcraft Cemetary, thinking her death was 1864. Recently receiving Civil War Pension records, where John's second wife Marilla ARMSTRONG applies for a widow's pension after his death I find WHY I could not get a death record from Kalamazoo Co! Eunice Dolph ARMSTRONG died 1862 in Decatur, Van Buren Co, Michigan. According to her broher-in-law, Warren  F. ARMSTRONG she was "taken home to Schoolcraft" to be buried. I am looking for an obit or death certificate. Does VanBuren Co have death records for this time period? On the 1860 census the family (Decatur, Van Buren Co, MI)includes John ARMSTRONG 28, Eunice 26, Malinda 7, John 4, Eunice H. Dolph 9. This daughter Eunice is mentioned in later John's pension information as Eunice M. HOSLER.... I am hoping a obit will tell if this is John's natural daughter, or his step-daughter?? Any information welcome!

I have copy of letter written July 1855 from Harley KNAPP of NY to his daughter Sophia KNAPP Rose of Cass MI. The letter states that he is afraid his son GEORGE KNAPP is dead as he had not heard from him since March. That letter was mailed from South Haven MI. He asked her to check to see if she could find him. Since he never showed up in NY or any other family records he might be buried in Van Buren County somewhere. If anyone having burial records would check for a GEORGE KNAPP who was born NY in Dec 1829. There were a number of Knapps in that part of MI.

I am searching for information on the following people on my father's mother's side. My grandmother was Irma Hazel GIDDINGS Williams 1894 - 1991. Buried at Prospect Cemetery in Paw Paw Township. Hazel married Lewis R. WILLIAMS Sr. Her father was Frederick GIDDINGS 1867-1957. His wife was Elizabeth Mae LANDPHERE 1867? - 1947. Resided in Lawton, MI in 1920. Owned a car dealership. Brothers to Frederick are: Henry GIDDINGS b ? d ? Frank GIDDINGS b ? d ? (may have died young) Charles C. GIDDINGS (age 10 years younger than Frederick). Married Carolyn STAINTON from Paw Paw, Michigan. Carolyn had a sister who never married and lived with Charles and Carolyn by the name of "Bessie" STAINTON. I would love any information such as dates and places of death. Where these people are buried and any children they had and their names? If anyone out there is doing research on this family I would love to get in touch with them. On the internet I found a Gertrude I. GIDDINGS Yates and her daughter Avis YATES Brownell that trace them to the Daughters of the American Revolution on the same lineage as my grandmother's application for the DAR. I suspect the that Gertrude and Frederick's father Henry Ely GIDDINGS were siblings. I would love to confirm this.

I am looking for information on an Ira OLDS. He married Emily FLAHARTY who was born about 1834. My great grandfather, James Ira OLDS, was born June 2, 1869 to this couple. Also, by 1873 she is listed on her father's will as being Emily BRANT. Any information would be much appreciated.

I am researching the WILLERTON name in Van Buren Co. John WILLERTON was a member of the 8th Michigan Cavalry. Company F. He was killed in Stoneman's raid at Macon, Georgia on August 1st, 1864. When his wife, Elizabeth (CURTIS) WILLERTON settled her pension claim in 1869 she was living in Lafayette, with a post office address of Decatur, Van Buren Co., Michigan. She had a son Thomas who would be 19 in 1869 and a daughter Rebecca who would be 16 in 1869. I am trying to find what happened to them after the pension settlement. Are there any census records for Van Buren Co. that someone can research, or any other possible records that could help me, do any records exist for Civil War soldiers. He enlisted at Columbia, MI. Thanks for any help you can give me
