Old Sharon Township Cemetery, Manchester, Washtenaw County, MI |
|
Old Sharon Township cemetery, which is situated next to Rowe's Corners Cemetery, is possibly the oldest in the area. Although this and Rowe's Corners look to be one cemetery the two are separated by a north-south strip of land. A debt of gratitude is owed to the late Harold Jones of Chelsea for his 1958 reading of this cemetery. Without him many of these stones would now be unknown. **Important note - Unfortunately several errors were found on the 1958 reading, so many of these stones (some in poor condition) cannot be verified.** Lucile Uphaus verified this township cemetery is separate from the Rowe's Corners cemetery, and Duane Haselschwerdt verified that no burial records exist. The data in <> was obtained from death notices in the Chelsea Herald and the Chelsea Standard. Sharon Township Cemetery is maintained by the township, but many of the stones are illegible now. Some have fallen and are slowly being swallowed up by the lawn, while others are standing straight and are as clear as the day they were made. Some of the oldest, from the 1850s, are still quite legible after all these years. There are several mature trees on the north side. A special 'thank you' to Larry Miller who did the reading of this cemetery in May 2000.
