Highland Park
| Highland Park was a farming community on a ridge north of Detroit. It was platted as the village of Woodwardville in 1825, but that village never materialized. In 1836 it was again platted as the village of Cassandra, but that also failed. By the 1860's it was known as Whitewood and then in 1889 it was incorporated as the village of Highland Park. Henry Ford purchased 160 acres in 1907 and constructed the Highland Park Ford plant in 1909 which led to the growth of the area and incorporation as a city in 1918. The first modern freeway (Davison) was opened in Highland Park in 1944. |
