Eloise Mental Hospital
on Michigan Avenue
Wayne County, Michigan

At its peak, during the Great Depression, the 903-acre Eloise compound was one of the largest mental hospitals in the country, serving more than 10,000 patients. It had its own post office, livestock and tobacco field. Some residents were indigent, others suffered from tuberculosis. Across the street, more than 7,100 Eloise residents are buried in a potter's field with only numbers to mark their graves.  (freep.com   12/8/2000)
