In the 1920's Hamtramck's population was over 50,000 residents. Your ancestor's lived in FLATS--apartments in two-story homes. In addition, in the back was the alley. The iceman would come down the street and sell to the local folks on a wagon. Men in horse-drawn wagons came down the alley well into the 1960's to collect large trash.  Anything they wanted was available for purchase on Joseph Campau Avenue.
