VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

Joseph Campau Avenue (near Goodson)

Colonel  Hamtramck's body rests in Veterans Memorial Park. Your ancestor came here to play tennis (this was the home court of Jane "Peaches" Bartkowicz, who at one point in the 1960's was rated 4th best woman player by the U.S. Tennis Association), ice-skate in the winter, play baseball (Hamtramck Little League won the World Series in 1959) and take the children to the playground. Retirees would play cards all over the park, on a typical sunny, warm day--you could find card players seated at all the park benches.
