Welcome to Wexford County

Welcome to this website which is a part of MIGenWeb and USGenWeb®, a network of websites that provide free online genealogical information. This county is currently available for adoption.  For more information contact our State Coordinator.

Wexford County was created on April 1,1840, from Manistee County under the Native American name of Kautawaubet (broken tooth). Three years later, the name was changed to Wexford after County Wexford in Ireland. The county was organized on March 30, 1869. The first settler in the county was B. W. Hall who settled near Sherman in 1863.

The Wexford County seat was first at Sherman, briefly at Manton, and finally Cadillac as a result of a contested election in April of 1882 followed by the "Battle of Manton" where the county records were taken by force from Manton to Cadillac.
