Other Plat Maps

Plat maps and other land records are a useful tool for genealogists as they show land ownership and can help to confirm ties between families and neighbors. Plat maps were published on a somewhat regular basis, usually by the county and/or local businesses. They are usually broken down by township and list the owner of the land, as well as the total acreage. The location of the residence is normally indicated, as are schools, cemeteries and other local places of importance.

For example,(Tracey Morris, former CC ancestry) -- William BIBBINS, the son of A. BIBBINS ( Moscow Twp. Section 2- 1872 ) married Maud WYLLIS, the daughter of George WYLLIS, who lived in Moscow Twp. section 12 in 1872. The families lived a little over a mile from each other - and the children probably attended the same school ( Moscow Twp. Section 1- 1872).

Other land records include deeds, land grants, and abstracts. These were created by a governing body, either the Federal Gorvernment, or a local government, and can usually be accessed by contacting the local courthouse.
