From Detroit, John enlisted at Fort Wayne as a Corporal for 3 years service on June 10, 1861, at age 20. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on June 1, 1862. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on September 15, 1862, and then to 1st Lieutenant on November 17, 1862. He was Killed in Action on July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and is buried there in the National Cemetery, Michigan Plot, Grave E-#5.
