Allegan's Championship Football Team
The Scholargram - Allegan High School, December 13, 1921
The Allegan football
team successfully closed its interscholastic football year at Otsego Nov. 29. The Allegan team, with a loss of five
regulars last spring, started the season slowely and worked its way gradually to the strong eleven which in its last
game, won the County Championship by a decisive score.
The gridiron season was inaugurated when Wayland was handed a
33-0 jolt at Allegan. Both teams were used in this game. As in all games, Captain Ritchie starred. On the first play
of the year Ritchie circled the Wayland left end for a sixty yard run and a touchdown. In the next game Paw Paw was
overwhelmed 59-0. Then things went wrong and Allegan lost two games by the same count 28-14. In both cases, however,
the Allegan eleven outplayed their opponents in the last half, the trouble being that the team did not start to play
football until too late. The next game was played at Hastings and Allegan emerged victorious 20-9. Grannis and
Edgerton woke up in this game and have starred in every succeeding game.
The following game was the greatest of
the year. Allegan played Holland at Holland and won 7-0. The two elevens battled evenly for three quarters then
Allegan started a march down the field which resulted in a touch down by the aerial route, Grannis being on the
receiving end. South Haven arrived late Armistice day and only half a game was played. Allegan triunphed 21-0.
Plainwell was then defeated 44-13, both Allegan teams playing part of the game.
Thanksgiving day Kalamazoo Normal
High suffered a 32-0 defeat in her first game with Allegan. On Nov. 29, the game to decide the County Championship
was played with Otsego. Both teams had been painted for this battle. Allegan proved to be a much superior team
winning 39-0.
