SUPERVISORS DECIDE TO QUIT
OPERATION OF COUNTY FARM; WILL HOLD PUBLIC AUCTION
Discontinuation of the farming perations at the County Farm was the main topic discussion at the Supervisor's
Meeting on Friday, January 17.
The Finance Committee's report read in part, " . . . determination that
over-all expenses of said operation [farming] including the present prices of labor, does not warrant continuation
of active farming and it recommends that it be discontinued . . . "
The recommendation carried with a vote
of 33 yeas and no nays.
The Finance Committee was authorized to make arrangements for a public auction,
which would include sale of all the tools, the equipment, and the stock at the farm.
The Board of Sinking
Fund Commissioners required advice as to when the board of supervisors anticipated that the money for the new
court house would be needed. There was a show of hands which indicated that the funds would not be needed until
1961. The Sinking Fund board needed the information as they have been advised that there would be approximately
$156,000 available, after the 1957 taxes were collected for investment purposes and the 1961 date would be
important in the selection of specific securities.
The county's 1957 annual reports were returned from
their various committees and all approved with a vote of 33 yeas and no nays.
