Arenac County Obituaries - 1880's

Arenac County Independent
February 19, 1885

Obit: "Died: - at Standish, on Sunday, Feb. 15 of inflammation of the bowels, Mrs. Joanna Harris, aged 30 years, 1 mo., and 18 days. Also, on Tuesday, the 17th of typhoid pneumonia, Nelson M. Harris at 33 years. Once more our community has been visited by "the monster Death," who are satisfied with gathering one into his fold, has taken two of our nearest and dearest friends "across the river to that bourne whence no traveller returns." Two persons, who for years have travelled together the journey of life, as loving husband and wife, are after an illness of only a very few days, taken from our midst. For several years Nelson Harris has been known in this vicinity as an upright, industrious and law abiding citizen, respected by all and held in esteem by his companions and co-workers. Mrs. Harris, daughter of Mrs. Major of Arenac, was born in Canada in Dec. 1854, but has been living in this country for the past 22 years or more, and has ever been in the best esteem by all who have had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Her beauty of character, her amiability and her uniform pleasant nature won for her a place in the hearts and affections of all who knew her. Sadness prevails in the entire community, because of the sudden demise of those whom they so universally respected. Their funeral was held at Arenac, and was attended by an immense concourse of friends and relatives."

Died in Sterling Aug. 21, 1886. Mrs. Netta Fullerton, wife of  Geo. Fullerton and daughter of Mrs. Margaret Embury of Omer, in the 27th year of her age.

The subject of this memoir was a dutiful wife, and much esteemed neighbor. She was at peace with every one, and the large concourse of friends that gathered at the church and grave, showed that she was loved by all. Our town perhaps, was never more aroused by the messenger, Death, than at the present time. Every thing was done that could be done to save her, but all in vain.
Our kind physican, Dr. Abbot, stood by her until the last moment. But God's way are not man's way. He thought it best to call her home from this world to Himself.  Her prospects seemed bright for a better country. Only a few hours before her death I was privileged to converse with her. And when asked, Is all well with the soul? She calmly replied, Yes, all is well.

The funeral sermon was preached by the writer in the M.E. church, on Monday, the 23rd inst, from the book of Joshua, first chap., verse 11. After which we laid her in the silent grave beside her infant son to wait the resurection morn. My God bless the sorrowing husband and friends.
