Helpful Hints for finding Arenac County genealogy
information on the Internet
- Search this site (Arenac County MIGenWeb):
- Search the Arenac County Historical Society web site:
- Search Michigan Records (Births 1867-1902 / Marriages 1868-1925 / Deaths 1867-1897 / Deaths 1920-1952) on Family Search site
Arenac County was formed from Bay County in 1883.
- County records prior to 1883 may be found in Bay County, Michigan
Tips for finding obituaries:
- Area obituaries from before 1890 to the present day are most likely to have been
published in the "Arenac County Independent". Papers prior to
1971 have not been microfilmed. Publisher's copies of early papers are not
available for public viewing.
.
- Various obituaries may be in the collection of the Arenac County Historical Society.
Check their index collection and contact them directly for further information.
.
- Current obituaries may be on-line. Visit the Arenac
County Independent's site. Many current obituaries are also published in the Bay City Times.
Tips for finding burial information from other than obituaries:
- After 1900, death certificates may list the place of burial. Unfortunately, many
times only a city of burial is listed and that may or may not be sufficient to determine
the cemetery.
.
- Church records may or may not also be useful in determining the place of burial.
.
- Records for the cemeteries that are maintained by the townships can be very incomplete.
As a consequence, if no headstone is present, it may be very difficult to determine a
confirmed burial location. This tombstone readings from the 1990's (as
published in Arenac County Cemetery Inscriptions) are available on this site.
