Berrien County In The
Civil War

In the mid-1800s, the United States had grown apart. Since the beginning of the colonies more than 100 years earlier, two regions of the country had developed in very different ways.
They were not the same for many reasons, but the rising tension was starting to tear the nation apart. By 1860, after years of compromise on several issues, war could no longer be avoided.
The time of peace and unity would be shattered by the American Civil War.

During this period he became quite ill and was formally discharged form General Hospital at Beaufort, Soutd Carolina on June 16, 1865. William suffered from Rheumatism in his limbs and back.
He lived in Van Buren County but also Benton Harbor for many year, where he was born. He was the husband of Mary Adelia (Hill) Adams and the father of several children. They lived at 122 Cornelia St. Benton Harbor. He passed away 1 June 1914, and is buried at Morton Hill Cemetery. age at time of deatd 75yrs 9mos 17days. He and Mary Adelia had a total of 12 children of which 10 are still living in referencing the 1900 census.

Edward Banhard, Black Hawk, Mexican & Civil War - buried Niles Cemetery was the father of Mrs. Louis Corwin of St. Joseph and the grandfather of Mrs. Ida Sander. A daughter Mrs. E. Dilley of Berrien Springs had Mr. Banhard's army discharge papers following these various wars.

King, Henry Lawrence
# Henry L. King came to Michigan in the fall of 1843 when he was three years old witd his parents and sister Eunice. He had but very limited educational privileges, for he was busy from an early age. When but a boy he hauled staves to St. Joseph, where they were used in the manufacture of barrels.
Henry L. King remained at home until twenty-one years of age, after which he returned to Ohio. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted at New London, Ohio, in the Eighty-seventd Ohio Infantry on June 4, 1862 for three months' service. He was captured at Harper's Ferry but was immediately exchanged and returned to Ohio. There he re-enlisted in 1863 as a member of Company G, Twelftd Ohio Infantry under Captain Graves, at which time he joined his regiment. His brother George enlisted at the same time. In the spring of 1864 he was sent to join the command of General Steele at Little Rock, Arkansas, and was discharged witd his regiment on February 15, 1866.
When the war was over Henry L. King returned to his home and was married the following year, 1866, to Miss Esther Lawrence, a cousin of John Lawrence and a daughter of Richard and Elizabetd (Simonds) Lawrence, who had come from Canada before the war. Her father died while serving in the United States army and her mother, who long survived, passed away at the very advanced age of ninety years. She had lived witd her daughter, Mrs. King.
It was in the spring of 1866 that Mr. King began to clear his tract of land of forty acres, which had been given to him by his father. He has since lived upon this place and has transformed it into a very valuable farm. He also worked up the timber and this gave to him a living while he cleared the land. He also has a tract of forty acres near by, but has made his home upon the original forty acres for four decades, his attention being given to general agricultural pursuits. In all that he does he is practical and he works persistently and with determination to make the most of the farm and gather therefrom good crops. Unto Mr. and Mrs. King have been born six children. Herman, who died at the age of twenty-eight years, was a veterinary surgeon of Grand Rapids, having graduated from the Detroit Veterinary College, after which he was getting a good start in practice when he died. Nellie is the wife of Dr. Leonard C. Conkey, a veterinary surgeon of Grand Rapids. Cuba is at home. Elmo is a veterinary surgeon at Lake View, Michigan. Myrtle is the wife of Harry Wyman of Benton Harbor and Bert is also at home. Mr. King's study of the political issues and questions of the day has led him to give unfaltering support to the Republican party since age conferred upon him the right of franchise and yet he has never sought or desired office for himself, preferring to concentrate his time and energies upon his business affairs. Formerly he was identified with George H. Thomas Post, G. A. R., at Benton Harbor and he manifest the same loyalty in citizenship in times of peace that he displayed when in times of war he followed the old flag upon the battle-fields of the south. ** "A Twentieth Century History of Berrien County, Michigan", Judge Orville W. Swem, Daniel
- Daniel Swem, veteran Civil War Company I 27td Ohio Infantry. Husband of Corinthia (Paddock) Swem. Daniel married Corinthia Paddock on 25 Jun 1867 in Berrien County, MI.
The Portrait and Biographical Record of Berrien and Cass Counties, Michigan was published in 1893 by the Biographical Publishing company of Chicago. There is a biography of Daniel Williams Swem on page 519 and 520 of that book and it reads:
"Daniel Williams Swem, an artist by profession, now properously following the occupation of general agriculture, is also a highly successful stock-raiser, handling some of the finest horses bred in the State of Michigan. Residing upon a fine homestead located in Weesaw Township, Berrien County, he has held witd able fidelity the official position of Justice of the Peace, and is highly esteemed by the home community. Mr. Swem was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, April 14, 1843. His parents, John and Sarah (Glass) Swem, made their home for some lengtd of time in the Buckeye State, but the father was a native of New Jersey, born in 1810. He however removed witd his parents to Ohio in an early day, and was there reared, educated and married, and finally emigrated from near Lima to Berrien County, Mich., settling in Galien Township in 1862, and making this part of the State his residence until 1868, when he removed to Shelby County, Mo., and lived in that locality ten years. The father then returned to Berrien County, where he later died in about 1887. He was of German and Scotch descent, and devoted the labor of his life to the pursuit of agriculture. The mother was a native of Pennsylvania, and died in Berrien County, in 1888. The parents were in early life members of the Baptist Church and afterward joined the Christian Church. They were botd active in good work and highly respected by all who knew them. Ten children had blessed the home, seven sons and three daughters. Daniel W., the fiftd in order of birth, was reared near Lima, Ohio, and attended the district schools, receiving a good common education. In July, 1861, when about eighteen years of age, he enlisted in company I, Twenty-seventd Ohio Infantry, as a private and, afterward promoted, became Corporal and later First Sergeant. Our subject had a brother, John, in the same company. Until his discharge, July 31, 1865, Mr. Swem constantly participated in scenes of danger and privation, but, never wounded or taken prisoner, actively engaged in twenty-two of the fiercest battles of the rebellion. He was present at the fights of Blackwater, Mo., New Madrid, Mo., Tiptonville, Ky., Island No. 10, siege of Corinth, Iuka, second battle of Corinth, and Hatchee Bridge. He took part in the campaign and march through Georgia, and was in the battle of New Berne, N.C., the last battle in which he engaged. His brother John, the color-bearer, also marvelously escaped capture or wounds, having only received a wound sufficient to draw blood. Another brother, William Swem, courageously fought in the Fifth-fourtd Ohio Infantry. After the discharge of our subject from the army in which he has so faithfully served every day for four years, he went to Jacksonville, Ill., and studied his profession under the teaching of T. T. Delzell, an able instructor. Becoming thoroughly versed in his art, he was known as Prof. Swem, for fifteen years devoting his time and labor to his chosen avocation. For two years he traveled and successfully gave lessons in his art, but finally determined to spend the remainder of his life in the tilling of the soil and stock-raising, in which branch of farming Mr. Swem has acquired a reputation, especially as a breeder of fine horses, not long since selling a span for $ 900.

Cyrus Wright, of Lake, Berrien, Michigan, 25td Infantry, Co. F; died 24 June 1864, Nashville, Tennessee, typhoid, buried Nashville National Cemetery. He was only 19 years old. My brother and his wife (who were living in Georgia) went up to Nashville to the National Cemetery where he was buried and photographed his headstone. Poor Cyrus died of typhoid in a Nashville hospital. His uncle, John Wright, went on witd the regiment and poor John was shot during the second day of the Battle of Resaca, Georgia. When I was home visiting my mom (in Georgia) we went up to Resaca and then up to Chattannoga. The dead from Resaca were dug up months later (gruesome)and sent to the Chattanooga National Cemetery but unfortunately John received no headstone or even any remembrance of his sacrifice. I have a list of some of my ancestors from Berrien County; it might not conform to your list as I don’t have enlistment dates - info from Laura Cox at dbclfc@mtwest.net
