Guidelines
for Using the Kent County Michigan GenWeb GenConnect Message Boards
PLEASE read the general guidelines
for all boards before you post, in addition to the guidelines for the specific
boards you intend to use. This is especially important for the Biographies
Board.
General Guidelines and Information for All Boards
-
Queries should only be posted to the Query Board. Queries posted to any
other board will be deleted without notice.
-
PLEASE list all the surnames mentioned in your post in the surnames
section and PLEASE PUT THEM IN ALL CAPS.
-
You can use the Search/Personalize Your Display link to view all the messages
that fit a certain search term.
-
When replying to a message, please reply to the ORIGINAL message, rather
than replying to a reply, which can go on ad infinitum and makes it harder
for visitors to browse all the replies to a particular post.
-
You can choose to be notified of any replies to posts you make. Scroll
to the bottom of the submission page for instructions.
-
Let me
know if your contact information (email, URL, postal mailing address)
changes and I will update your queries, submissions, etc.
-
Please do not post materials that are already in the GenWeb archives as
the duplicates waste RootsWeb resources. If you would like to transfer
your files from one location to the other, let me know and we'll arrange
it.
-
Transcriptions of cemeteries, census records, vital records and most indexes
should go in the GenWeb archives rather than on the GenConnect boards.
Let
me know if you are not sure where the best place is for your material
and we can decide together.
Surnames and Searching
-
You can use the Search/Personalize Your Display link to view all the messages
that fit a certain search term.
-
There is a surname index, updated weekly, for all posts to all the Kent
County message boards. Click on the Surname Index link at the top of every
page to view it.
-
There is a surname search function for all posts to the Kent County message
boards. Click on the Surname Helper Search link at the top of every page
to use it.
Query
Board
-
Posts must be Kent County related. Please be sure to mention this county.
- Please use descriptive subject lines.
- CAPITALIZE SURNAMES, especially those you enter into the surnames box.
- The traditional format for subject lines, and by extension, queries is: SURNAME, Place, Time.
- In the subject line, you can denote migrations from one place to another by using >> or >.
- Since all the places should be Kent County, information about particular
townships should be included if possible.
- Time can be either the era during which a family lived in Kent Co. or the
birth and death dates for a particular individual.
- You don't need to say "Searching for..." or "Looking for..." as the nature
of a query makes that self-evident.
- Please use mixed case in the body of your message. all lower case letters look silly.
- Further advice on writing effective queries:
- Queries about available Kent County resources or fellow researchers should
probably be addressed to the Kent County Mailing List. See the Kent County
home page for more information on this list.
Biographies
Board
Special Instructions ,Please Read
-
The most important thing is to use descriptive subject lines that include
the book, the person and the page numbers.
-
Use these citation suffixes to indicate which book the biography is from:
-
Everett 1878
-
Chapman 1881
-
Baxter 1891
-
Bowen 1900
-
Goss 1906
-
Fisher 1918
-
Subject line format examples:
-
William DUNHAM, p. 994 (Chapman 1881)
-
Augustine GODWIN, pp. 713-714 (Bowen 1900)
-
Please include a complete bibliographic source for biographies not transcribed
from the six main sources -- those published in other resources, those written by descendants or individuals themselves, etc. Be cautious of copyright issues, i.e. the Wyoming and Grandville histories are not in the public domain, etc.
-
Please make sure to list the surnames in the surname box. If there is an surname spelling error in the biography, you may want to list both spellings in the surname box.
-
When replying to a posted biography with questions or extra information, please try and reference the name of the person of the original biography was about, and your relationship or possible relationship with the individual.
-
Do not post obituaries in this section, even if they provide significant
biographical information. Biographical newspaper articles are only suitable
for this section if they were written while the individual was still alive.
You may want to tag such articles (Biographical Newspaper Article) and
use the headline as the subject for the post.
Deeds
and Property Records Board
-
Please feel free to use the URL submission section to provide links to
maps that depict the location of your ancestors' property.
-
Building histories that offer genealogical material are also welcome on
this board.
Obituaries
Board
-
Primarily for obituaries, but other newspaper articles with significant
genealogical data are welcomed, such as marriage or engagement announcements
or golden wedding anniversaries.
-
Please be sure to cite the newspaper in which the article appeared, the
date it was published, and the page if known.
-
If the obituary headline was unique -- something more than just the name
-- you may want to use it as the subject line or part of the subject line
for the post. Including the year the article was published in the subject
line is also helpful.
-
Example: Banker's Wife Dies in Crash (1933)
-
Don't forget to list the surnames in the surname box. If women are listed
under their married names (Ex: Mrs. Daniel P. Hixson) and you know their
maiden name (Ex. Lucy Monroe) you may want to include both surnames.
Wills,
Probate and Estate Records
-
For wills, estate inventories, property distributions, etc.
