Wilson Cone Feb 14, 1900 Wilson Cone, one of Lake County's Pioneers, died at his home in this Village at 7:00 last Wednesday morning. He had been failing for years and finally accumbed to a complication of diseases. Short services were held at the house under the direction of Undertaker Furnice. Reverand Wilcox preached the sermon. John G. Bigbee June 1900 John G. Bigbee died suddenly in the Village of Chase June 8, 1900 at 84 years, 11 months, on Friday the 8th. Mr. Bigbee transacted business in Reed City returning to his home on the afternoon train accompanied by his little son. They retired at an earlier hour. At 9:00 the boy noticed his father breathing very hard, and inquired as to his father's condition and recieved no reply, when he notified the neighbors. John G. Bigbee was born in Richland County Ohio on July 5, 1835. He enlisted in the service of his country in the Summer of 1862 with the 121st Ohio Volenteers and served his country faithfully to the close of the war. In the Fall of 1865 he moved to Michigan and homesteaded in what is now Pinora Township, Lake County. He was an industrious man and soon had hewn in the timber a little clearing and life looked brighter. He leaves four sons, a brother, and two sisters, and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss. He was a member of the Major Fox Post G.A.R. in Chase and his comrades after post service laid him at rest. Funeral was held in the Congregational Church. Pastor was ably assisted by Reverand Dighton of M.E. Church. Floral deccorations were lovely, the attendance large. Comrade Bigbee will be missed by our Village. [Note: the first permanant white settler in Pinora.] Ned Knevels Aug 13, 1900 Good bye were his last words as he sank to rise no more - Ned Knevels drowned while bathing in Crooked Lake. He was one of many young people who left early in the morning and soon after arrival at the camping ground, less than an hour went by when the sad accident occured. He started out in his boat alone for a swim. He lost his hat overboard and jumped in the water to swim after it, but the effort was inaffective. He returned to his boat and clung to it for a short time while he took a rest and swam after it again, but there was a high wind and the hat drifted some distance from him. He took a few strokes when he turned suddenly and started for the boat again and called for help. Everyone saw him in plain sight, and thought he was crying for fun, but soon realized the danger and were helpless to do anything. He floated on top of water several minutes saying that he could not hold out any longer he called good bye and sank out of sight. John Randall got a boat for him. It seemed in no time there were 100 people there. The body wasn't recovered till 2 Friday morning. His funeral was held Saturday the 11th, and was the largest funeral ever held in Chase. Ned Knevels had many friends and was very popular in this town. He had plans to attend college and was even said to be engaged. [Note: Son to John Knevels, store owner. Crooked Lake is now called Idlewild Lake. Condensed from notes, but mostly word by word.] Elmina Cone McLean Sep 5, 1900 Mrs. George McLain died at the home of her Mother, Mrs. W. Cone, last Thursday, of typhoid fever. She had been very ill for the past six weeks, and death came as a welcome relief from the intense suffering which the patient had undergone for the past week. Reverand Pomeroy offered prayer at the house, but the funeral sermon was preached at the Congregational Church, Sunday. Reverand Wilcox officiating. Internment was made in the new Chase Cemetery. Clinton McCraney Sept 12, 1900 Clinton McCraney son of Thomas McCraney died of typhoid fever. He was buried in the Old Fiandt Cemetery South of town. [Note: Cemetery better known as the Pioneer Cemetery.[ Benjamin Ringler Jan 1901 Benjamin Ringler died in Chase January 16th 1901 at 1:00 Wednesday afternoon at age 70 from a case of dropsey. He came to Lake County October 15th, 1874. [Full Obituary in Reed City Clarion] Marriette Mushbrush Tanner [Mrs. Melvin Tanner] March 11, 1903 Mrs. M. Tanner died in her home on Friday the 6th. The funeral was held at the M.E. Church on Sunday. Sheldon Dec. 16, 1903 A little daughter of Mr. Sheldon's died Saturday night. Edwin Robson Dec. 16, 1903 Caleb Robson returned Monday with the remains of his son Edwin, who died at Denver Colorado last week. Mrs. Edwin Robson and little daughter returned with him. George E. Burley Jan. 20, 1904 Burley- At the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Hoskins, in the Village of Chase on Tuesday night, January 19th, at 9:00, occured the death of Geo. E. Burley, of old age, being 84 years old. The funeral service will be held from the M.E. church in Chase, Reverand J.F. Fetterhoff of this city, officiating. William H. Smith the funeral director. The deceased had ben a resident of Chase and vicinity for the past 33 years. [Note: father of Barkus and Noah Burley.] John W. Barnell June 8, 1904 John W. Barnell died. He was in Company E. 20th Indiana Volenteer Infantry February 8 1864-July 12 1865. [Full obituary in Reed City Clarion] Mary Jane Stone July 6, 1904 Mrs. D.L. Stone passed away at her home here Sunday evening at 8:00. The remains were taken to Holly, Tuesday morning for burial. Reverand Hallenbeck of Reed City conducted the service at the house. [Full obituary in Reed City Clarion] Hoover Nov. 23, 1904 The little babe of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hoover of Mason, was brought here Monday for burial. Mr. Pomeroy conducted the services at the M.E. Church. Dr. Lucius W. Torrey Dec. 28, 1904 Dr. Lucius W. Torrey died Sunday Dec. 25, 1904 at 3am from effects of a stroke a few days ago. He was an old resident locating here 1872. The funeral was at the M.E. Church Reverand Gale officiating. He served in the War of the Rebellion in Co. B, one of the Michigan Calvary Regiments. [Full obituary in Reed City Clarion] |
