The memorial below was for my grandmother's younger sister who was born
3/3/1862 in Oswego, NY
to Alvaro Porter and Amanda Anderson Porter. They also lived in Watertown,
Jefferson County, NY, and Amanda returned to Watertown after Alvaro's death
in MI. My grandmother, Nellie Porter, married Fred Everett of Dexter, NY. Lizzie was 13 years old when she died in Big Rapids, MI. The original memorial is beautifully done with special fonts and borders. Since I don't have a scanner my typing will have to do, and the poignant message comes through anyway. Perhaps some of you are descendants of her classmates. Whereas, Death entered our class at eleven o'clock P.M., February 19th, 1876, and took from our midst our dear classmate and friend, who was one of our number from July 27th, 1873, until her death; and, Whereas, We recognized in her and intelligent, pure-hearted and faithful christian girl; who merited and possessed our love and esteem; therefore, Resolved, That we, her surviving teacher and classmates, miss her, and deeply mourn the loss we have sustained; and that we will ever cherish her memory, and emulate her example; and, Resolved, That her parents, sisters and brothers, have our heartfelt sympathy in this their hour of bereavement. And, while the stroke of death seems severe, yet, although her her home was happy and pleasant as could be desired, we assure them that THEIR loss is HER eternal gain; for "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints," they have "An house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
