The Twentieth Century club was organized in the year 1895 and federated in 1902. Their first year book was printed in 1895. Mrs. Appoline Falarieau was the first president, and remained an active and loyal member until her death in 1907. The club was organized for literary purposes and has carried out this policy to the present time. The work is enlivined with many social events, such as the annual summer picnic at the cottage of Mrs. James Darrah at Clear Lake, and the midwinter picnic at the regular election of officers, the first Thursday in January. As they have many good actresses among the members, the yearly "Parlor Play" is one of ther attractive features. Many social afternoons are held at the homes of the various club members. The work has been history, literature, art, music and miscellaneous topics. The club has contributed largely to the Phelps Free Library. They have furnished the room for committee meetings and donated a clock for the main room. Mrs. Allie McFarlan is the present efficient president. It is the expectation that the future will show an increase in the good work accomplished by this society. The present officers of the club are: President - Mrs. Allie McFarlan Vice President - Mrs. Alma Marsh Secretary - Mrs. Alice Snyder Treasurer - Mrs. Luella McGregor The directors are: First division - Mrs. Amanda Jones Second division - Mrs. Carrie Stewart Third division - Mrs. Frances Clark Fourth division - Mrs. Theresse Matchette Press Correspondant - Emma Darling |
