Diem
Family 1902 |
The one on the
left is Frederick H. Diem who moved to Carsonville in 1872.
The one on the right is his brother, Jacob Diem, who lived in
St. Clair County. The picture was take not later than Oct
1881 as Frederick was killed in a sawmill accident on that date.
Both are Civil War veterans. Jacob was only in for six
months. Frederick was with the 6th Michigan Cavalry with
Gen Custer, he fought at Gettysburg, was captured in Oct 1863,
spent five months at Belle Island in Richmond, VA,, seven months
at Andersonville, GA when he was paroled. He was returned
to his unit in Jan 1865 and was shot in the foot when someone
threw a handful of cartridges down the chimney in his hut.
He went home, was married, had eight children and was killed in
a freak sawmill accident near Forestville when the boiler blew
up on his fifteenth wedding anniversary. His youngest
child was born in Feb 1881.
