T6N-R12E, Almont Township, Lapeer County, Michigan

Early History

T6N-R12E, in the southeast corner of Lapeer County, was the home of the county's first white settler, in 1828. It went through several name changes, as the county was reorganized.

Mia Township, organized on 7 Mar 1834, was one of the original 3 townships. It consisted of T6N-R12E and T7N-R12E. After 9 months it was renamed Brisol Township on 12 Dec 1834, and again renamed Almont Township on 7 Apr 1846. Then on 25 Mar 1850, the northern half, T7N-R12E, was split off and named Imlay Township, leaving T6N-R12E with the designation Almont Township. [HRP, pp. 147-8]

The village one mile south of the center of Almont Township was first called Newburg. The name was changed to Almont in 1846. [HRP, p. 38]

The Road

In 1827 William ALLEN and his son, G. W. ALLEN, along with James THORINGTON and the hunter and guide Levi WASHBURN, of Washington Twp, Macomb County, cut a road northward through the center of Almont. This road must have been at least 10 miles in length, since it crossed Bruce Twp, Macomb County, and passed through the future location of Almont village, and beyond. It must have been approximately where Highway 53 is today. The earliest settlers in Lapeer County lived along this road.

James DENEEN

The first white settler in Almont, and in fact the first in Lapeer County, was James DENEEN, on 16 Oct 1828, when he purchased and inhabited the 80 acres in the W half of the NE quarter of Section 9, near Shanty Brook. For 2 years he was the only resident, his nearest neighbor being 10 miles to the south, in Macomb County. James went to California in the gold rush, about 1849, and probably died there.

Although James DENNEN was the only settler before Fall 1830, there were three women who bought land before him, and didn't settle on it right away.

Three Women

The first land owner was Lydia E. S. CHAMBERLAIN, whose land entry in Section 4 was recorded on 1 Feb 1828. Next, on 27 May 1828, Diana KITTREDGE purchased land in Section 34. Then, on 29 May 1828, Mary HOLLISTER purchased land in Section 15. I don't think any of these three women every lived in Lapeer County.

Jonathan SLEEPER

The second white settler was Jonathan SLEEPER, who purchased 80 acres, being the E half of the NE quarter of Section 28, on 23 Nov 1830, and built a log cabin on the south end of his lot. The north end of his lot later became part of the village of Almont.

Brothers Oliver and Bezaleel BRISTOL

The road built by ALLEN, ALLEN, THORINGTON and WASHBURN ran along the eastern border of Jonathan SLEEPER's property. On the east side of the road, Oliver BRISTOL had purchased a lot in Section 27 on 6 Oct 1830, and built a frame house. He settled there with his family in May 1831. Oliver's bother, Bezaleel BRISTOL, cam with him, and purchased his own land a little farther south, on 16 Jul 1831.

Elijah M. SANBORN

The next settler was Elijah M. SANBORN, who purchased land in Section 34, on the east side of the road, on 26 Jun 1830. He settled there in Mar 1831.
