Attica Township (T7N-R11E), Lapeer County, MI

Early History

The area T7N-R11E, now known as Attica Township, went through several name changes, as the county was reoganized.

[Note: The infamous Attica Prison is in Attica, NY, not MI.]

At first, most of the county, including T7N-R11E, was part of Lapeer Township, organized 30 Dec 1834. Next, Lomond Township, organized on 11 Mar 1837, consisted of T6N-R11E and T7N-R11E. The first township meeting was held at the house of Daniel SMITH. The name was changed to Dunham on 2 Apr 1838, and changed again to Dryden on 3 Apr 1839. On 16 Feb 1842, the north half of Dryden, T7N-R11E, became Attica Township, leaving T6N-R11E with the designation Dryden Township.

The first settler what is now Attica Township was Benjamin HUNTLEY, with 40 acres, being the SE quarter of the SE quarter of Section 35, registered on 25 Feb 1836. This was not the first land entry, as several were dated as early as 1835. [HRP, pp. 147-8]

Earliest Land Entries:

6 Jul 1835, John A. CONKLIN, Section 23
24 Jul 1835, John W. SQUIER, Section 27
23 Nov 1835, John A. CONKLIN, Section 22
26 Nov 1835, Joseph W. HICKS, Section 34

In 1863, there were no villages in Attica Township. A cluster of a half-dozen buildings appears in the NW corner of Section 15, on the property of William WILLIAMS, a lumberman from New York state, who built a sawmill there in 1851. The village of Attica later formed in sections 9, 10, 15 and 16. A post office named "Mill Station" was established there, on 9 Oct 1867, with Oscar A. WILLIAMS as the first postmaster. The office was renamed "Elk Lake" on 12 Sep 1870, and became "Attica", after the township, on 1 Feb 1871.
