Eugene Brown
Huron Times, newspaper in Sand Beach Friday Sept.30, 1882

DEATH OF EUGENE BROWN
Irving Eugene Brown, one of the brightest young men of Sand Beach, died at his residence on Friday afternoon last, at three o'clock, after a brief illness of two weeks. He leaves a wife, two little daughters, aged three and six.
For three weeks previous to his confinement to his home he had been complaining, but was loth to give up his duties at the station. But nature finally demanded attention, and he was obliged to retire from active service. His physician pronounced his ailment typhoid malarial fever, and he battled with it for four days, when the fever took a change the Sunday before his death. He gained rapidly, and his ultimate recovery seemed certain, Thursday he suffered a relapse, and he passed away the next afternoon, remaining concious until the last.
Eugene Brown was born in Canada, April 30, 1860. When quite a young lad he came to the United States, and located in Chicago, coming to Sand Beach when he was nineteen. On Sept. 9th, 1880, he married Henrietta Gager, of Sigel, but was compelled to give up his young bride a month later, when death claimed her, and removed her from this earth. He married again July 11, 1882, Eliza Furtaw, who survives him. Three children were born to gladden the family circle, two of which are still living.
Eugene had been a member of the life saving service for nine consecutive years, and had served this entire period in the station at Sand Beach where he was beloved and respected by all. He was a member of the Huron Lodge, F. & A.M., and his devotion to the craft, and his demeanor towards his fellows was of the highest standard. He embodied all of the characteristics that are possessed by men whose sterling qualities, manliness, and integrity, make them not only popular, but also impresses upon the community their incalcuable worth when death removes them from their earthly abode to the one beyond.
As a life saver, he was one of Uncle Sam's bravest boys. No hesitancy on his part ever occurred when duty called him to face death on the stormy billows in rendering assistance to some poor mariner and his vessel. He was a bright and jovial fellow, and leaves a host of friends in the service who will ever cherish his happy disposition, his sociable manner, and integrity.
The funeral of the deceased was held from the Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon, Rev. Henry preaching the funeral sermon. The Masonic faternity attended in a body, and officiated at the house, and at the grave, the beautiful service of the Masonic ritual being rendered in an impressive manner. It was the largest funeral procession that ever left the village, and bore evidence of the popularity of the deceased, whose remains were interred in the Rock Falls Cemetary.
Mrs. Brown will receive $2000 from the Caro Masonic Mutual, her husband having held a policy in that company for that amount.

W.B. Brown, brother of Eugene Brown of the L.S.S., a nephew of W.W. Brown of Sigel, died at the residence of the latter Wednesday morning of a malarial fever. The deceased and Hugh Reynolds of this place comprised the crew of the small schooner Yankee. They both returned home, were taken sick with the same symptoms, and Reynold's life was despaired at one time, but he is now improving. The sickness was doubtless caused by malaria contracted in some unhealthy locality where the boys stopped.

Transcribed by Rebecca Johnson Ott, Sept 20, 2008

(Mrs. Snell died July 28, 1897)

"A Noble Woman Gone"

Mrs. Thomas Snell died at her home north of this village on Wednesday
evening at about eleven o'clock, after a brief illness of a little
more than two weeks at the age of seventy seven years and four months.
Jane M. Johnson was born in Niagara County, New York, on the 28th of
March 1820.  On the 21st of November, 1844, she was united in
marriage to Thomas Snell and lived upon a farm in the county of her
birth for several years.  From here they removed to Haldimand County,
Canada where her husband engaged in the lumber business and later to
Saginaw.   In 1862, she came with her husband to Huron County and
located at Bay Port and in 1883 removed to the farm north of this
village where in comfort and usefulness she spent the last days of
her earthy pilgrimage.
Mrs. Snell was a woman of strong elements of character, possessed of
a strong will, remarkably clear insight into things, extraordinary
force, yet all these powers brought into subjection by an abiding
faith in the teachings of Christ which she professed when but a girl,
she always had opinions of her own and from  them she was seldom led
away.
She began life as a teacher in the public schools and during all the
following years of her life was a teacher in the Sabbath School.  Her
whole life and best powers of heart and mind were devoted to the
moral, social, and physical betterment of those whom she lived
among.  Rarely has it been the privilege of a woman to so stamp her
impress upon a community as did she upon the people among whom she
lived in this county.   From the time she joined the Baptist Church
in early life she was a devoted disciple of the Great Master and her
end was the triumph of that faith.   Her faith was not of the
sentimental character, but a powerful conviction and her end which
came to her in the full powers of her mind was met with extraordinary
composure in an exultant confidence that it was but the door-way into
the land of eternal youth.  Her's was indeed a magnificent death.
Her illness dates back to early spring and resulted from an over
exertion and anxiety in the care of her husband, while at the
hospital for the treatment of his eyes, which a little more than two
weeks ago brought on a malignant type of jaundice and she for the
first time took to her bed.   The funeral will occur this afternoon
at 2 o'clock at the family residence.  Rev. Leonard, of Unionville,
officiating and the remains will be laid to rest in the Colfax
cemetery.   She leaves a husband now past eighty years and three
sisters, the
youngest of whom is past sixty, to mourn her loss.  One
sister, Mrs. Chas. H. Smith, and her husband is attending the
funeral.   Mrs. A.L. Taylor and Mrs. M.C. Delano of Lenawee County
are too feeble to be present.  Mrs. Abbott of St Clair, whom she
brought up, was also with her in her late illness.
