Lester "Bud" Max Flake
(March 30, 1913 - December 10, 2006)

Munising

Lester “Bud” Max Flake, age 93, recent resident of the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette and fifty year resident of Old Indian Town Road, Munising, died on Sunday, December 10, 2006 at Marquette General Hospital at 11:30 p.m. He was born on March 30, 1913 in Kehoe, KY to Michael and Effie (Arthur) Flake. Bud entered into the U.S. Army on April 15, 1942 at Ft. Custer, Michigan. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater at battles and campaigns at Luzon and the Northern Solomons. Lester earned the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, six Overseas Service Bars, one Service Stripe, and a Good Conduct Medal. Bud was discharged at Fort Sheridan, IL on December 20, 1945. He worked in the woods most of his life, on an ore boat in the summertime, and also as a railroad section hand. Bud was a member of the V.F.W. and he enjoyed fishing and operating his HAM radio.

He is survived by his sister – Thelma West of Munising; a brother – Madison Flake of Mancelona, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his parents and brothers – Roy, Jim, and Clyde Flake.

Services will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Military honors will be presented by the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore, Michigan.
