Ellen Marie Mahon
(October 10, 1912 - May 5, 2008)

Munising

Ellen Mahon, age 95, formerly of Varnum Street, died on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. Ellen was born October 10, 1912 in Iron River, MI. She was the daughter of Alex and Maria Lake. She had one brother Reino Lake who is deceased. She graduated from Iron River High School in 1931. After graduation she worked at Ben Franklin Store for two years and then at Angeli's Grocery Store for five years.

She married Ray Mahon in 1938 and had three children, James Mahon (Vera) of Grand Rapids, MN; Harold Mahon of Wetmore, MI and Marie Mahon of Murrieta, CA and Step-Son Jim King of Eatonville, WA. Ray preceded her in death on August 6, 1991. Beside the three children she is survived by three grandchildren Kathleen (Kirk) Wilcox of Sumner, WA; Rebecca (Ben) Hudson of Blaine, WA; Michael (Cindy) and three great-grandchildren Jerrika, Alex and Ashlyn of Grand Rapids, MN. She is also survived by nephew, Reino (Arlene) Lake of Iron Mountain, MI; nieces, Nancy Bastinello of Stambaugh, MI; Marie (Mike) McMahon of Pickett, WI, Vickie Lantz of Hillsboro, OR and several grand nieces and nephews.

Ellen and Ray owned and operated several businesses. First the Munising Bakery then sold the business to Clyde LaRock and moved to Wetmore, MI where the operated a grocery store/gas pumps/cabins later converting the grocery store to a restaurant. They operated this until around 1956 when they bought back the bakery in Munising and moved back to Munising. They operated the bakery until Ray retired in the 1970's. In 1963 they started going to Florida for the winter months. There they owned and operated a bakery in Jensen Beach later moving that to Bell Glade and closed that when Ray retired. Ellen was a homemaker, loved to sew, weave rugs from looms, garden, travel, see new places and meet new people. She always had a twinkle in her eye and a ready smile with a fresh cup of coffee along with cookies and cake. You never went hungry at her house. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Senior Citizens, and Historical Society.

Visitation will be on Friday May 9, 2008 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. Ellen’s funeral will be conducted by Pastor Deborah Hubbard on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Munising.
