Carol Shafer, age 78, of E22026 Everrett St., died Thursday morning, August 23, 2007 at her home in Grand Marais. She was born on October 4, 1928 in Battle Creek, Michigan to the late Carroll and Billy (Pence) Latta. Carol graduated from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek in 1946. She then married Raymond Leroy Shafer on March 18, 1948 and together they lived in Battle Creek until moving to Colon, MI in 1992. Carol worked as a dental assistant for many years before retiring in 1974. She moved to Grand Marais in 2001. Carol loved nature and all animals, especially her cats and the deer that she fed in her back yard. She had a soft spot for all the animals at the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter in Manistique, where she would stop to pet and feed the cats and dogs as often as she could. Carol loved being in the UP living in Grand Marais. She enjoyed the adventure of driving to Marquette in the middle of a snow storm. Even the worst storms that no one wanted to drive in, Carol would say Its just a squall.
Carol is survived by her son Cameron Latta of Westland, MI; daughters Sheri Shafer of Grand Marais, Syd (William) Diaz of Pensacola, FL, Alix (Paul) Matkovich of Chicago, IL, Mary Heacox of Grand Marais; grandchildren Andrew Shafer of Phoenix, AZ, Toni Schmidt of Chicago, Anthony, Vincent, Joseph, and Angela Latta all of Westland, MI, William Diaz III of Pensacola; great-grandchildren Andy, Alex, Abbie, and Addison. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years Raymond Shafer.
There will be no public services; Carol wanted everyone to remember her by her quick wit and laughter. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that all donations be made to: Eva Burrell Animal Shelter, 6091 W US 2, Manistique, MI 49854.
