Lillian M. Walimaki
(March 14, 1918 - July 9, 2006)

Eben Junction

Lillian M. Walimaki, age 88, formerly of the E-T Road, Eben and resident of the Superior Health Haven in Munising, died in the emergency room of Munising Memorial Hospital at 11:28 a.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2006. She was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on March 14, 1918 to Kalle and Lyydia (Ahinko) Virtanen. Lillian attended school in Loudspur, worked as a nanny in the Chicago area, and then worked for Detroit Diesel Allison Engines during WWII. On November 24, 1945, Lillian married William “Bill” Walimaki. They were married over thirty-two years when Bill preceded her in death on January 12, 1978. Lillian was a past member of the First Lutheran Church of Trenary where she was active with the Ladies Circle for many years. She also attended Eden Lutheran Church in Munising and was a member of their Country Circle. Lillian was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, canning, and entertaining family from Finland.

She is survived by her daughter – Patricia Marshall of Martinsville, Indiana; two granddaughters – Vicki Marshall of Martinsville, IN and Shaunna Marshall of Carmel, IN; a sister – Bertha Pitkamaki of Eben Junction; four nieces – Mary Ann Laukka, Barbara Jean Tyner, Arlene Sharon Lancour, and Carol Susan Fleck; one nephew – Raymond Pitkamaki; and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, brother Tauno Virtanen, and two half sisters Fanny and Lempi Ritola.

Lillian’s visitation and funeral service will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2006. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Rev. Leslie Niemi will conduct Lillian’s funeral service at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home’s chapel. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.
