Wetmore
Wetmore is
located at the junction of M-28 and FFH-13 in Alger County.
This village began as a small, mostly
Indian, settlement called Floeter, and was given a post office of that
name on July 2, 1883, with Francois X. Brusette as its first
postmaster. It was renamed Munising (the present Munising was then
known as Old Munising) on October 23, 1899. A station on the Duluth,
South Shore & Atlantic Railroad.
William L. Wetmore had come here to cut
off hardwood for charcoal about 1871, and he built kilns and a general
store. When he retired about 1894, the village was renamed for him, and
when its post office was restored on December 3, 1895, it too was
renamed for him.
Another tradition is that Webmore was named after a local land investor,
Fred P. Wetmore.
This town was in Schoolcraft County until
Alger was organized on March 17, 1885.
