Statewide registration of Michigan marriages began in 1867. Prior to that, vital records may have been recorded in township or county clerks' offices, at churches, or not at all. The following links are for locating Michigan marriage records during different periods. Records are sometimes indexed with incorrect spellings of first and/or last names. *Michigan, U.S., Divorce Records, 1897-1952 (ancestry.com, requires paid subscription) - Includes images with names, marriage date and place, divorce date and place, reason for divorce, number of children. Michigan began requiring counties to record divorces in 1897. This collection includes court returns of divorces, as well as divorce records created by the Michigan Department of Health, Bureau of Records and Statistics. Records are included up to 1952, however images after 1945 are not available in this database.
