HALL posted by Pam Swiler on Sunday, April 19, 1998

A broken headstone with the inscription, "Lucy, sife of Thomas Hall. died Aug 23, 1843" has found its way to a home in Ionia County. We are seeking information on the burial site of Lucy Hall and any history one might have on her. We would like to return the stone to the gravesite. It was found at a home in Lake Odessa face down in a low spot at the rear of the property. The location where it was found is actually just inside Barry County, however, it is currently being stored in Ionia County.

HALL posted by Pam Swiler on Monday, April 20, 1998

Who is Lucy Hall? Where was she buried? How did her headstone from her burial plot end up where it did? Cyndi Kalczynski and Pam Swiler, President of the Ionia County Genealogical Society and a member of the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society, would like someone to answer these questions. Cyndi contacted Pam when she discovered the stone. Both Pam and Cyndi would like to see that Lucy's headstone is returned to its final resting place. "This was someone's daughter, possibly mother, or grandmother," Swiler stated. "She deserves to have her headstone back where it belongs." The broken tombstone, currently in the possession of Swiler, was found at 437 Grace Street in Lake Odessa. It was face down in a low spot at the rear of the lot. Grace Street is located off from Donna Drive in the Hillside subdivision, south of Jordan Lake in Barry County. The puzzle as to how it got there remains a mystery. "A number of thoughts passed through our minds," Swiler said. Was this an old burial site, or was this a missing headstone that was part of some vandalism that often times happens in old cemeteries? Someone out there knows the answer to the question of who Lucy Hall was and how her stone got where it did." The Kalczynski's bought the cottage where the headstone was found in September of 1990, "...so it has been on the property since before that time," according to Kalczynski. They located the stone while clearing the area. There was concern that this was a family burial plot for Hall and that it had gone unnoticed all these years. The sexton at the Lakeside Cemetery thought that the first burial there occurred in the 1860's. Lucy died in 1843. The top of her headstone says, "I am at rest". The rest of the inscriptions, only readable by dusting flour on it to make the carvings appear more legible, reads "Lucy, wife of Thomas Hall. Died Aug. 23, 1843." The rest of the stone is gone. It had been broken off from its base, as so many of these old stones are, and separated from its home. Anyone having knowledge of the location of the burial site or the history of Lucy Hall is asked to contact Pam Swiler at (616) 374-3141 or by e-mail at pkswiler1@juno.com.
