Compiled Directory of Businesses in Lapeer County, MI 1832-1874

There are few things more thrilling, for a genealogist, than finding an advertisement or other information about an old business that employed or was owned by an ancestor. It's also interesting to see what goods and services were available to our ancestors.

The list below concentrates on the early businesses in Lapeer county. The main sources are the directories printed on the county map in 1863 and in the atlas of 1874, biographies and newspaper ads.

I have not made an effort to distinguish between businesses and individuals, since they were mixed together in the source directories. Most businesses were farms, most businesses had few full-time employees, and most had the surname of the owner/proprieter as part of the business name.

If you find any mistakes or omissions, even typos, please let me know. I want this directory to be accurate and reliable.
