PRESBYTERIANS MARK 136TH BIRTHDAY (Allegan County Photo Journal)
A gala evening celebrating the oldest Congregation in Allegan, was enjoyed at the First Presbyterian Church for it's 136th birthday.
Old friends gathered to honor members
who had been on the Church Roll for fifty years or more.
Walter Moore (62) Trude VanMelle (60) Maude Barrett (55)
Mary Teusink (55) Dora Teusink (51) Pegg Allen (50). In absentia the following members
were honored: Geraldine Lemoine (58) Dr. Richard Miller (50) and George Teusink
(50).
In the list of members of the Pioneer Society of Michigan appears an old Allegan County resident.
#222 - F. J. Littlejohn, place of birth - Litchfield, N. Y., date of birth - 20 July 1804, place of first residence in Michigan - Allegan, Allegan County in June of 1836.
Perhaps our ancestor's ways were not so bad after all. Examples
of how the old methods are being utilized to answer today's problems and high prices
are springing up across the nation. The Gouverneur (New York)Tribune-Press carried
the following news item in it's July 12, 1972 edition: "Vermont's first new
new all-wood covered bridge in 80 years, replacing a steel structure near Woodstock,
cost $20,000 less than lowest bid for metal span." We have not yet seen the
end of covered bridges, nor of many other things with which our ancestors were intimately
familiar.
