Arenac Co newspapers

There have been several newspapers in the county but the only one published in the 21st century is the Arenac County Independent, a subsidiary of CherryRoad Media (of Parsippany NJ) since 2022.

Arenac County newspaper publications from 1882 to now

  • Arenac County Independent
    • Began publishing in Standish circa 1882-1951 and 1972 on. Publishers in the early years were James J. Decker, Nelson Ireland, and Harry M. Myers.
    • It absorbed the Omer Progress to become Arenac County Independent & Omer Progress, from 1952-71, published by F.E. & E.J. Perlberg. “Omer Progress” was dropped for the title in 1972.
    • In 2000, all publishing moved to Ogemaw Co. The establishment was sold to Cherryroad Media (NJ) in 2022.
      • Papers from 1972-2000 have been microfilmed and are available at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. Decades of obituaries are in scrapbooks at the Arenac County Historical Society. Papers from 1883-1972 are on file at the newspaper office, available for public viewing by appointment.
  • AuGres Enterprise was a Republican Party paper that began circa 1906 by Enterprise Publishing Co, editor Bert S Moran.
  • Omer Progress was a Republican Party paper that began circa 1895, published by J J Ransom. In 1952, it merged with merged with Arenac County Independent.
  • The Wave as published in Standish circa late 1894 by Sam M LeRoy. Research to date has not produced any more information.
  • Twining Record began publishing on 1898 by Record Printing Company (of Benton Harbor MI).
  • Twining Siftings began circa 1902 by T Edward Johnson. Research to date has not produced any more information.
