Simon Mason "Sam" ROSE, bn 1862 Casco, Allegan, MI... died 1950 Charlevoix, MI
To northern MI in 1881.
-1890.. obtained government diving license. -1892..Laid 1st water main across the channel between round Round Lake + Lake Michigan (government channel) at Charlevoix + later repaired it.
-1893.. relaid a 24 inch pipe across the river at Columbus, GA.
-Installed a dam + an old Spanish water wheel at DeLeon Springs, FL.
-Raised sunken ships (said by him to be the most dangerous work for a diver).
-Dived for 20 years (1890-1910).
-Started sailing in his teens in South Haven or Grand Haven.
-Served almost every station on a ship from cabin boy to first mate before receiving his unlimited master's papers.
-He owned + sailed the schooner, Kate Lyons in the Lake Michigan coastal trade for many years.
-Master of several harbor tugs + government boats.
-Piloted the US bureau of fisheries cruiser, Fulmar, planting fry in Lake Michigan.
-Master Papers to sail the Great Lakes for all tonnage.
Master of the steamer, Eric L. Hanley (or the Erie L. Hackley). Later held part interest in th RJ Gordon of the Tannery Company of Boyne City on which he carried nitrates from Buffalo to upper lake ports for a season.
Operated tugs bringing schooners into the Round Lake Harbor at Charlevoix, MI.
-Member of the Lake Tug Protective Association.

Seeking any information on my great grandfather Antoine/Anthony DONER/DONNER/DONAIS who was a sailor (Captain?) on (a) Great Lakes vessel(s) during the mid-1800's. According to the Cheboygan County death index, he was born about 1836 in Cheboygan, was married, and died 6 Jan 1895, age 59 years, 5 mo, occupation, sailor. He was the son of Antoine and Harriet DONNER. His cemetery record, at Pine Hill Cemetery, Cheboygan, lists him as DONER, Antoine, Co. G, 5th Michigan Infantry, G.A.R., and yet another source lists him as DONAIS. Thanks so much for any information you can provide.

According to the book "Norwegian Sailors on the Great Lakes" by Knut Gjuset, Arno Press, p. 146, an ancestor of my wife, Arve JOHNSON, was owner and master of the schooner Union in 1867. At that time we believe he was sailing out of Sheboygan WI, but around 1880 he moved to Manistee MI. We don't know if he was still sailing at that time. Saw this book at the Vesterheim Genealogical Center in Madison WI. Looking for any additional information about shipping at Manistee.

Looking for CHAPMAN and DODGE family who may have owned a ship that carried goods from NY state. According to family history a John CHAPMAN's parents, Edmund and Laura, owned a ship on which he was born 3 miles from NY. Later, a Betty DODGE and her sister were tutoring the younger CHAPMAN children on the ship when Betty met John and they were later married in St. Joseph Co, MI in 1839. Betty's father was Abimael DODGE of Canandaigua NY, then later of St.Joseph Co, MI. There is some confusion whether they shipped goods across the Atlantic when John was born between 1808-17 or whether they shipped goods on the Great Lakes. Any information would be appreciated. Kay

My ggrandfather Patrick GORDON was a sea captain that was washed overboard at White Fish point ( I don't have dates or the name of the ship) it was after 1893 and prior to 1910. Years later again I don't know the dates but Patrick's son Hugh GORDON drowned at White Fish Point. I would like very much to obtain the information on Patrick & Hugh GORDON. Thanks.

He ultimately attained the rank of Chief Engineer. My Grandfather's name was Edwin Monroe TILLEY he sailed from about1905-1935. He sailed on the John Gehm I would be very interested in the occurrence of either name if anybody were to run across them in their research. My grandfather was Roland HOBART. He died in Detroit at the U.S. Marine Hospital. His Death Certificate states that he was an "American Seaman" and the Occupation was "Lake Boats". My father never knew his father and he searched for him for all of his adult life but died before we found where his father lived or what he did. Roland's home was in Atlas Twp. in Genesee County. He died on 16 Feb 1950. His wife's name was Frances, maiden name unknown. Any information will be appreciated.

Noah J MADDEN, was a sailor, lumberjack, and a farmer He sailed on the Great Lakes in the summer, worked as a lumber jack in the winter months. When he sailed the great lakes out of Port Huron with the destination Duluth, Minnesota the family tells that he would sometimes swim along side the boat even in the chilly waters of lake Superior. Noah MADDEN was born September 21, 1863, in Strathroy, Ontario. His family moved to Michigan and as a young man he sailed on the Great Lakes. It was while sailing that he heard about the prosperous little town of Onaway. Noah married Eunice HEATH the daughter of Ermina HEATH. Noah and Eunice had six children, five sons and one daughter. The family lived first at Ruby, Michigan. At about the time the youngest child of Noah and Eunice was two years of age, in 1901, Noah moved his family to Onaway, Michigan. At first Eunice and the children lived south of Onaway, while Noah worked as a lumberjack at Old Camp Six, north east of Onaway. Noah had worked winters in the Onaway Lumber Camps before bringing his family to Onaway. Hoping to find what ships Noah sailed on and the year or years he sailed.

Wm. Jackson VOTE/VOUGHT, John VOUGHT/VOTE, Leander KNOWLTON. I found this old letter in my mother's briefcase after her death. I am hoping there is some further knowlege about the Birdie Mae. It is possible that Wm JACKSON's father John VOTE/VOUGHT and his father-in-law Leander KNOWLTON may have had an interest in this sail boat.

Letter to Mabel WRIGHT dated Dec 1, 1957 from Arnold COPELAND RR3 Box 216 Charlevoix, Michigan

On outside of envelope it said last wife was PREVOICE. I think he may have meant his grandmother's name was PREVOICE, or name could have been PREVOST.

Dear Mrs WRIGHT, I received your letter yesterday. Will do the best I can telling about the Voughrts. Jack VOUGHT was my mother's stepfather. He and my grandmother were married at either Allegan or Pine Grove,Michigan in 1865 or 1866. He had a sawmill and a blacksmith shop there. They moved from there to Epoufette, Michigan where he built another sawmill and blacksmith shop. I am not sure if they lived in East Jordon or not but I am sure they were at Epoufette about 1873 as my brother was born there. Jack also owned a two-masted sail boat while he was at Epoufette and transported fruit and vegetables from Charlevoix to upper Michigan. St. Ignace was the main stop for him. This boat named the Birdie Mae was wrecked near St Ignace. I was up at Epoufette in 1948 and the old log house they built and lived in was still there. From there they moved to Ironton, Michigan about six miles south of Charlevoix on the shores of Pine Lake, now called Lake Charlevoix. There he had a small farm and a blacksmith shop. Also he worked as a stone mason and carpenter, and was a gunsmith. I lived there with my grandmother till I was 14 years old. Granddad died there 60 years ago. I can't remember him as I was only one year old at the time I believe there were three daughters born by this marriage. Sarah Jane, Maria, and Mary. They are all dead. Mary was the only one I ever knew. She died about twenty years ago at Detroit. Her husbands name was C K WILLETTE. When Jack married my Grandmother he had three sons by a former marriage, John, George,and Albert. Albert was the only one I ever met. He had a Blacksmith shop at Charlevoix for many years. Then in the early 1900's he built a garage on Antrim St. in Charlevoix. From there he retired and moved to Boyne City where he died about twenty-five or twenty-six years ago. His son Leon VOUGHT lives at the Grandview Hospital at East Jordon, Michigan. I don't know if Leon could add anything to what I have told you or not. Am sending an ad that I found in the Boyne City Paper. Maybe they could tell you something. If you ever come to Charlevoix be sure to stop and see us. Will be glad to show you where the old homes were. And you are welcome anytime. Hope this will help you in tracing the Voughts. My gggrandfather, Albert G. FITZGERALD (b: Feb 1832 Oswego, NY d: May 16, 1901) was involved in shipping on the Great Lakes most of his adult life. He began working as a sailor out of Oswego as early as 1850 (see, Oswego City Directory 1850, 1852, 1854, 1856 and US Census of 1850, 1860, 1870 1880 and NY Census 1855) ultimately becoming a Ship Master in about 1857 (see Oswego City Directory 1857 - 1874; see also, Finn, J. Leo. Old Shipping Days in Oswego, The Oswego County Board of Supervisors, Page 51, "Captains Out of Oswego from 1830-1877: A. FITZGERALD") In 1874 he began working as a commission merchant and ship broker which he continued until at least 1893 (see, Oswego City Directory 1874-1893). In 1874 several newspaper articles appeared in the Oswego Daily Palladium (June 13, 1871, page 4, column 2, "AN Excursion Barge"; July 1, 1871, page 4, column 1, Moonlight Excursion and July 5, 1871, page 4, column 7, Ontario Queen) regarding Capt. Albert FITZGERALD fitting up of the bark, Admiral as an excursion barge. When the conversion was complete she was known as the Ontario Queen. In addition to Albert working on the lakes, his brothers Chellis FITZGERALD (b: 2 Jan 1820 Boscawen, NH d: 28 June 1846 Oswego, NY) , Samuel FITZGERALD (b: abt. 1824 Oswego, NY, d: abt. 1860 Oswego, NY) , and Alpheus FITZGERALD (b: 4 Mar 1835 NY d: 7 Jan 1907 Oswego, NY) were each at some point in their lives involved in shipping out of Oswego. From Alpheus’ obituary in the Oswego Daily Palladium, 8 Jan 1907: "When a young man, he with other brothers followed the lakes and in the early sixties with his brother, Captain Alfred purchased the schooner Governor, which he sailed for a number of years. He was also a steward on the lakes. Some years ago he retired from activities on the lakes and lived ashore. Before entering the employ of the Lackawanna he was steward on the tug Charlie Ferris.

I am looking for more information about the parents of one of my great grandmothers. Susan JEWELL was born in Quebec City 8 May 1855. Her parents, Henry JEWELL and Tamzan POAD/PODE/POADE, were married 19 August 1840 in Quebec City. One of Susan's brothers, (Henry born - 28 Dec 1850 and died - 9 June 1881 in Quebec City), is shown as a steamboat captain/owner/agent in various census records. He lived for a period of time in Petrolia, Ontario where he married Elizabeth LIGHTHEART about 1871. Can anyone help me with more information about Henry, his parents, his family and his experiences as a captain on the St. Lawrence? MASON, Joseph B.. Ship Pilot on Great Lakes. Only data known is that and he was born in Canada, apparently lv in Michigan when son John B. born 1860. Now John married in Charlevoix County, and lived in Petoskey. Unable to link him to families in that area. I do have two pictures of ships that Joseph piloted; so must have been navigator, rather than pilot boat.

I'm looking for any and all info regarding my g-g-grandfather, last name GLASKE (or GLASKI). He died in a shipwreck in Lake Michigan near Traverse City. I don't know the year, but it was around the time his daughter was born, which was the late 1870's. The name of the ship was possibly the Westmoreland. Family history says he was the captain. His sister-in-law was cook and also died in the wreck. He's buried in Detroit across from the Capucian Monastery (Elmwood Cemetery?). Thanks for your help. :-)

Louis VINCENT was a Merchant Marine in the early 1900's. He sailed the Great Lakes in the summer and came home to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Cheboygan area to work as a lumberjack and a farmer during other seasons. He was married to Mary and had seven children-Henry, George, Rose, Melvina, Dave, Virginia, and Joe. Melvina married Lewis McMillan and had three daughters, Lois, Eldine, and Eleanor. One of my ancestors, Charles HUNTOON b 29 May 1866, d 28 Oct 1892 (death date given in family Bible), was said to have "been one of the unfortunates who went down with the steamer Gilcher, and found a watery grave in Lake Michigan during a terrible gale in the fall of 1894" (quoting father's obituary). FULLER, Edwin C. - My father sailed on the Lakes from about 1936 to 1942 as a cook. He sailed on the following ships: B.F. Jones, Laughlin, Thomas, and the Walters. Would like any info regarding these ships and people he may have sailed with. He is 82 and still curious about his past. Thanks.

I am trying to find information on the death of my gr grandfather, George Washington CLEMENT, who was a Master Mariner, shipping out of Oswego, NY, during the 1860s. The first knowledge I have of him was as Master of the Schooner Thornton in 1864. He appears to have alternated with Capt. J. W. TURNER on various trips with the Thornton. Some of the crew members of the Thornton listed in my grandfather's log were Ben ARMSTRONG, Culvin MAINWARING, G. P. WAHL, John PORTER, Thomas GWIN, H. B. ARMSTRONG, Thomas BOXBURY (?), Edward DUNOVAIN, Orin CAPRIN, George GREENFIELD, Charles LAWRENCE, John T. LAVIN, Edward ELES, Harvey CROUCH and T.B. WIMAN. My grandfather died on or about 25th October 1868 in Saginaw, Michigan. His body was shipped back to Oswego for burial. From newspaper accounts there were terrible storms on Lake Huron during that time frame with many ships damaged and/or sunk. Although I found information on the storms from the Marine Column in the Oswego Commercial Advertiser & Times, I was not able to find out how he died or which schooner he was on at the time. The State of Michigan did not have a death certificate for him and the State of NY were not keeping death records prior to 1880. My grandfather had two brothers, Capt. John Colby CLEMENT, who lost his life during a terrible storm on Lake Erie, while Capt. of the Schooner Opeechee on or about 06 Sep 1864. A third brother, Capt. Charles CLEMENT, died 22 Jan 1863, aged 29 years. The newspapers in 1863 were not available so I have no information on Charles. My grandfather's next door neighbor, Samuel PATTEN, was also a ship's Captain during the same time frame and appeared to be related to the CLEMENT family. I would appreciate any information or suggestions. I have checked all the early Oswego papers plus the census records. My gr grandfather and his brothers were all born in Canada.

My grandfather, David FOSTER, sailed the Great Lakes in the summer time in 1895 to 1900. He lived near South Haven, MI so assume he sailed from that port. Would love to have his service record and ships he sailed on. Is that possible?? Don't know how to research for that info.

Looking for more info on Alexander STEWART who was a ship captain on the Great Lakes. He may have lived in Chicago. His son, Charles STEWART was born in 1867 in Chicago.

Seeking descendents of James Jackson IBBOTSON, ship captain, schooner Reindeer, Detroit (b. 1834;d.1892) and his son, George E. IBBOTSON (1862-1936), ship captain, Baraga, Baraga County, Michigan. Also seeking information on Anthony IBBOTSON, brother of James Jackson IBBOTSON, who was a sailor in Canada in 1861. John HAYES was living in Detroit ca 1860 and occupation was listed as a sailor; any information on this person welcomed.

I am looking for information on Richard JUSTIN originally from St.Clair, Mi. He was supposed to have died on board a ship at the Soo Locks, on July 14,1914. The ship later became known as the John S. Manuel. It is believed he was hit in the head by the handle of some type of machine. The Soo Historical Society does not have any information on him. I don't know if he was buried in the Soo or not.

Seeking confirmation that William J. (Joseph or James) REEVE sailed on the Great Lakes from about 1845 to 1856.
William J. REEVE was born in England 11 Oct. 1831.
He moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada about 1835-6.
He is said to have run away from home about 1845-6 and worked on ships on the Great Lakes.
He married Oct. 1856 and lived in Illinois (Putnam Co) until his death.
He applied for and was naturalized 28 Oct. 1865.
He died 22 Feb. 1902.

Looking for info on relatives, lived at Port Hope Ontario Canada, Deluth Min., and Brighton Ontario Canada around 1840-60. Thomas POTTS worked as cook on Great Lakes (1840) and sons Thomas and Charles also. IRELANDS and LEES were in Deluth and Brighton as well. Thomas MORTON settled at Thomasburg Ontario Canada. Appreciate any info on this. Thanks.

Searching for information on Elonzo (EL) CUNNINGHAM. Know him to have been on the Ben Hur, a river boat that sailed from Knox Landing, in Marietta, in 1888 as a 16 year old yearning to travel. Believe that he was on Lake Erie by 1898 when he went ashore in Fairport Harbor and stayed in the Lake County area the rest of his life, dying in 1963. Have a great deal of information on his family and him before and after his time on the boats but know little of his life during that time. Eager to share information. Please email.
