Looking for information about my maternal Grandfather, James Robbins PARKER, and his siblings and parents. He was a captain on an iron ore ship for several years before 1916, when the family moved to Detroit. His route was through 3 Great Lakes, from Duluth, MN - Ashtabula,OH. I'm interested in what ships he served on and when. He also had one or two brothers involved in shipping. He was born in Algonac, and lived in Port Huron and Marine City before moving to Detroit. John SPINKS, jr. was also involved in shipping. He was my maternal great- uncle, and I believe was a marine engineer. He was born in Marine City. Joseph BAIRD was SPIMKS's half brother, also born in Marine City. I believe he also served on a Great Lakes ship. Joseph LUFF, jr. (my maternal great-great-grandfather)was a shipbuilder in Marine City, MI from 1848-1868. The family story is that he built the largest wooden ship on the Great Lakes, and named it after his oldest daughter, Sophia Jane. There were problems with the balancing of the ship - Did it ever sail? Who was Joseph Luff's partner in the business? .
I am looking for information about GIDEON H DENISON. His headstone reads "drowned in Lake Michigan 1871, Sept 15, at the sinking of the steamer HOMSIDE. " The word HOMSIDE is a guesstimate. The headstone is worn and hard to read. Any information about him or the ship would be greatly appreciated. Any ideas where this information might be obtained also appreciated. This seems to be my only ancestor involved in shipping on the Great Lakes, so, I am new to this area of research Thanks A Segard
Leander E. Bennett was born in Clayton, N.Y. ca 1850. At some point he went to Michigan where he was a lumberman for several years. He married about 1875 to Eva Bailey of Ithaca, N.Y. They had two sons; Charles David Bennett b 28 Nov 1877 in Bay City, Mi and Edwin Bennett b 3 May 1879 also in Bay City. According to Charles' birth certificate Leander was a laborer. On Edwin's he was a lake captain. Seems like pretty quick work to me, but times were easier then. Sometime around 1900 the whole family moved to Buffalo where they all lived the rest of their lives. Leander ended his career sailing as first mate to his son Charles, with Eva was ship cook. Charles spent his entire career at sea, on the lakes and salt water, for several years after WWI. Would like any additional info and family contacts.

AUGUST WEDLER was a sailor on a ship from Germany in 1874. He was in Detroit. He was married to Elizabeth Gerbig in 1890 in Detroit. I am assuming he was a sailor that decided to stay in America. I do not find him on any ship lists. Do you have such a ship list? Thank you Barbara Wedler Hudson

Jesse SHOEBRIDGE was a shipwright at Niagara Falls/Buffalo, NY from 1870 to 1892. Any information on Jesse or the ship building industry in that area and time frame would be greatly appreciated. Prior to that time he was in Chicago as a shipwright and left after the fire.

My Grandfather, Joesph Bentley was an oiler on a ship named "Bradley". It traveled the shipping lanes of the Great Lakes. He worked on it around 1928 or a little before. He was about 36 at the time he worked on the
"Bradley". He was working on the ship when he was married to Floy Covert, and thier first born son was born in 1928, named Arlo. Joesph was born in Antrim Co. Oct.14, 1892. Is there anyone out there that might remember him or know where I could find a ship manifest, for the Bradley for about the year 1928?
Looking for information on Charles Furtaw (Furton) who was a "surfman" in the US Life Saving Service around 1880- 1900. Have been told he was associated with the Pointe Au Barques Lighthouse. In the 1900 Census, he shows up as the "Head" of a seven man team that was, at that time, located in Alpena. Any information is appreciated!
In the book "The History of Shipping on the Great Lakes" is there an account of British Army personnel being aboard any vessels? My Great Grandfather died by falling into the hold of a ship somewhere in the Lakes. I am looking for any confirmation on William John Hannigan.
