Posted earlier note looking for info on Bill MCGILLICUDDY who sailed on the Great Lakes during the mid '20's to mid 30's. Discovered that the ship was the
"Peter White", Cleveland Cliffs Co. Dad also sailed on the "LaSalle" and maybe even the
"Marquette". Any info would be appreciated. Also, if any one knows of a Steve KOOCH (nick name) would like to hear from him. Kooch is short for a name that sounds like KOOCH NEH KEV ICH... he lived in and around Kingsley MI, Traverse City. THanks, Pat
Looking for information on James Linklater b.Oct.11,1822 in Shetland, Scotland. Sailed the Great Lakes as a young man. Married Julia Root. I want to know which ship or ships he worked on. I do have a letter he wrote from Sandusky,Ohio. His daughter Harriett was born in St.Clair, MI. Grateful for any help.
Captian George W BROWN and Captain Greenlief BROWN, were both born in Fairfield, Herkimer, NY in 1827 and 1832. Sons of Simeon BROWN and Lucinda (BURLINGAME). In 1834 the family relocated on Pillar Point, Jefferson, NY a penisula at the Eastern end of Lake Ontario. By 1850 both sons were involved in shipping on the Great Lakes. In 1856 George W. and his new wife Eleanor (SPENCER) BROWN and their daughter Althea J. had resettled in Pt Huron, St Clair, MI, in 1856 the the rest of the Brown family moved as well. Some to Wisconsin, and Captain Greenlief and Susan Roxelane (WOOLSEY) Brown, moved in with George and Eleanor for a year or so. By 1860 both brothers were Captains and Greenlief and Susan moved out of the city to a farm in Columbus, MI where Greenlief retired to. He died in 1906 and Susan died in 1916.
Philander died during a shipwreck (The "Commodore Lawrence") off the Vermillion River (Lake Erie) near Cleveland. Henry Luce, one of the survivors, married Celina (Dodge) Hills after Philander's death. A Luce family lived in Ripley, Chautauqua, NY, and he might have been from there. Celina and Philander were living in Ripley NY. Death notice appeared in the Fredonia Censor. NEHG Register, Vol 115: Father Nash's Record of Baptisms - Central NY 1797-1827: Eleazer & Betsey Hills: Jane, Sidney, Philander, Christopher on 2 February 1817. Death Notices 1819-1899 reported in the Fredonia Censor, compiled by Lois Barris, 1991, p. 273: "HILLS, Philander - Drowned Aug 30, 1849 off Vermillion River near Cleveland. Schooner on which he was passenger capsized, all saved by (but?) Mr. Hill ..." from Fred. Census., 9/11/1849.
Looking for info regarding any Zerbel who were passengers, landing Marquette MI in the fall of 1963. Could have been quite a ride considering the weather on Lake Superior in November.
Looking for a Capt. Emery who supposedly was on ship "Onikama/Onekama" which carried cargo on Great Lakes. He lived in Petoskey, MI, according to family. Died early 1920s. Was there such a vessel? Has anyone a record of Capt. Emery? (first name unknown.)
I am trying to find my 3rd great grandfather Samuel SHERBURNE. He was a ships carpenter and he was living in Detroit in 1837. He died in 1848 in a accident when he was caught in some kind of a belt while being employed and was fatally injured. I have been trying to find any information about this accident. Looking for information on Jean (John) J. KEMP/KEMPF. He was a sailor on the Great Lakes between 1850 and 1880. He lived in Buffalo, New York. We know he spoke fluent French, German and English. He was from Dunkerque, France and immigrated to the US about 1850.
Looking for father of Edward Aubrey. Edward was born in Oakland County, Michigan. His father worked in some capacity in shipping on the Great Lakes and was married to Angeline Paul from Canada. Details are very sparse. He either left the family or died while at work but I don't know when. Any details appreciated!
ROSE, Walter - He was a Sea Captain on the Great Lakes. He was born abt 1834 in Ohio. He was living with his family in Zilwaukee, Michigan according to 1860 MI. Census. He may have died during the Civil War and before 1870 as I've been unable to locate him on MI. 1870 Census records. His younger sister, named her firstborn son after him in 1868 so I believe he died before then. His two younger brothers died while serving in the MI. infantry during the Civil War. I have a William McDonald (or MacDonald) who was a sailor on the Great Lakes, ca. 1850's. In a dive in Lake Erie, searching a sunken schooner, the pipes between the air pump and his head armour became fouled, thus drowning him. This apparently happened 20 Jul 1853. Can anyone tell me how I might go about getting more information on this mishap? Thanks. .
CORRECTION; I am searching for my uncle Albert Collins. He was a sailor on the Great Lakes before war broke out. He was on the ship
"Margaret" when it went down in 1942 off the coast of New York. He was an oiler with a crippled arm. I do not know his birthday. His father's name was Benjamin, His mother was Emma (Bacon). He had a sister Margaret or Marguerite and a brother Bill. They lived in Indiana for a while but Albert was not born there. SS is no help because I do not know his date of birth. Any suggestions would be welcome. .
My great grandparents both were born in New York, moved to Michigan, and later Wisconsin via the Great Lakes. Does anyone know of a source for passenger lists for ships sailing the Great Lakes? My great grandfather, Amos BRAMAN, would have been a very young boy when he left New York in the mid to late 1840's with his married sister. They lived in Allegan County, MI. My great grandmother, Nancy Fish, probably immigrated in the 1850's and lived in Kalamazoo County, MI. They left MI with Nancy's family (Lyman & Hannah Fish) in the mid 1860's after they married. My mother remembers her mother talking about crossing Lake Michigan on a ferry. Thanks. Karen .
I am looking for anyone who has seen or knows of a George Barnes who was the Captian(owner) of 4 ships on the Great Lakes between 1835-1858. He married Susan Victoria Dayton in the late 1850's and is listed as a farmer, married and with 1 child on the 1860 census. I have been told that he was in the English Navy before coming to the Great Lakes and that all 4 of his ships sank. .
My GGGrF, George Webster Malone was born in Ireland in 1811? Possibly in county Meath or Cork - that's all I really have right now His son George Beecher was born in April 1847-8? in Garden Island, Frontenac County,Canada, which is now Ontario. He was listed in the Ontario archives as a sailor on the Great Lakes, married to Annie Davis with a son, Anthony Edward Malone born Dec. 29, 1869. Anthony later immigrated with the rest of the clan and lived in Minooka, IL in the 1940's. George and Annie went on to have three more children, all born in Frontenac County Canada: George Simpson (1872), Ethel Blanche (1877), and William Haynes(1877) - who is my GGrF. I would like any information on both George Webster and George Beecher. Family tales have George Beecher as a ships captain (cargo?)on the Great Lakes during the civil war. He retired from shipping at 40 yrs old and became a physician/surgeon in Detroit, MI. and later moved to Chicago. .
