NORDOFF, John at one time a Foreign-going Master - Ocean freighters and then a Gret Lakes captain circa 1875-1910. Lived in Two (or Twin) Rivers (or Creeks) Minnesota and moved to Collingwood ON cica 18 75 1890. No one replied to previous query so I wonder if any one out there knows where else I can go for research. Maybe a seamans union for Saunders or an Officer's association for NORDOFF. I am looking for information about my grandfather Captain Ronald MCLEAN. He sailed the St. lawrence and lived in Detroit and Prince Edward Island, Canada. He sailed the Great Lakes from approximately 1877 to 1910. He loved music and composed Gaelic Sea songs. He was born on the Isle of of Skye, Scotland about 1848.
Searching for any information regarding John CARVER who worked as a ships carpenter on the Great Lakes, sometime between 1879 to 1898, working out of Kingston ON, sometimes with the following two DAVY Captains for whom I am also placing a query for information: Capt. Robert Albert (Ab) DAVY - from the Garden Island/Kingston ON area. Known to have been towing the Menendosa (sp?) the night she went down. Probably worked between the years 1880 and 1930. Capt. George DAVY - from the Kingston area, probably worked on the lakes between the years 1886 - 1900. These dates are all educated guesses based on birthdates and dates of death. Looking for the identification of a freighter plying the Great Lakes, possibly based in Cleveland, OH, during the period 1840- 1866. This vessel sank with a load of furs. My Grandfather James P. KELLY/KELLEY b july 5 1879 in ohio was suppose to be a merchant sailor. He met and married my Grandmother Catherine M Salmon in Waukegan Illinois in 1904. How would I go about verifying this employment info and finding any records. He was from Cleveland, Ohio. They lived in Cleveland until atleast 1907, before relacating to Illinois.
William MONTGOMERY sailed the lakes in late 1880's. We have no further info as to ship nor ports but suspect lakes Erie and Ontario. He was b abt 1867 in Ontario, city is unknown. We know that this is so meager that only luck could help us find any info about W Montgomery, but we have to try. Anyone with any information please contact us as we have information after 1900 in New York state.

Looking for background on C L HUTTON captain of the schooner "Westley" as depicted in the painting pictured in the 1960 Dossin Marine Museum guide book. May have been my g.g.grandfather. My great grandfather, John Amos DAY, was "a sea captain" and sailed on the Great Lakes. He is reputed to have gone down with his ship in 1868. He was born 28 Feb 1836. He was supposed to have been "well educated". He married Permelia Perlina JERMAN in Chesterfield Township, Macomb Co., MI, 8 Jan 1860. (I have their marriage certificate) They also had a farm in Algonac MI on Stone Road. I have seen references to a Captain Joseph Day in History Of The Great Lakes published in 1899 and re-issued by Freshwater Press listing captains alive in 1899. Permelia Perlina Jerman Day is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery, Algonac. Also buried there is infant Joseph A.Day, their son. Children also included Melissa D., Sarah Saphronia (my grandmother), Clara P., and Elda J. I don't know if there is connection between John Amos Day and Joseph A.Day, but surmise they were brothers.I would appreciate I would like to learn name(s) of ships he sailed on and his parentage. Thomas Jefferson ALLYN lived in St Claire Co MI He may have worked as a seaman - I know he went to China in 1850 because I have a dish he brought back - my cousin has 2 sets of dishes he bought there. He died 1854, His wife was Mary - she no doubt remarried, but I have no further record of her. My gr grandmother was Sarah Allyn who married Wm SWEETSER in 1858. Is there a way I can find out the ships crew names?
Hi gang, I am looking for Anders PETERSON, b Abt 1827 in Sweden, d Abt 1925 in Texas. He came (as the story goes) to America about 1856 with 6 brothers, they came over on a cattle boat, & they had a barrel of crackers and a large block of cheese for their provisions. None of the living relatives seem to remember or have any documents about his parents or the name of the ship he came over on, or the city or Län he came from. Anders may have landed in the Great Lakes area and debarked there. Later on Anders came to Texas and was married to Nancy Jane PENDLETON in Bosque County, Texas in 1877, but his other 6 brothers must have stayed up in the Northern States somewhere. I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Captain Charles Robert THRASHER who worked for the Pittsburg Steamship Company at the turn of the century. We believe he was born in Sandwich, Ontario or Belle Isle on January 13, 1863 and died in Cleveland, Ohio on February 25, 1916. His family was from Canada and he had a number of sisters who lived there. Captain Charles started his own family in Buffalo, New York and then relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. He travelled the Great Lakes from Buffalo to Minnesota. Some of the ships he manned were the

Searching for information on Captain Charles Archibald McMillan. We believe the name of his ship/steamer was called
"Queen of the Est" or "Queen of the East". He was born Dec. 25, 1835 at Darlington, Ont. Can. He married my husband's Great Aunt, Clarissa "Clara" McLean, the daughter of John McLean from the Hudson's Bay Company (1821-1846). We only heard that Capt. McMillan sailed the Great Lakes and relocated to Buffalo, NY about 1871. He had two children, a daughter Mary Margaret McMillan and a son, Charles. Would like the correct name of his steamer. Sorry to say, we don't seem connected with the other McMillans searching for their ancestors. Thank you for any help!!
