BAKER, GRACE
NELLIE (WHITE) - Battle Creek Enquirer Mrs. Grace Nellie (White) Baker, 85, of Battle Creek, MI, formerly of Detroit, Michigan died December 20, 2007 at Battle Creek Health System surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Detroit, MI the daughter of George Charles White and Henrietta Hazel (Upell) White. She left school after the 10th grade, but later went back and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. She was employed at F.W. Woolworth Company for 23 years and formerly employed at the Weston Biscuit Company. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards, and crossword puzzles. Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 after 4 p.m. where the family will be present 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 27, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service with Jon Fruytier officiating. Burial will be at the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens in Emmett Township, MI. Memorial tributes may be made to Charity of one's choice. BAKER - MURRELL L. - Battle Creek
Enquirer - May 3, 1989 Murrell L. Baker, 69, of Springfield, died Tuesday in Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, where he had been a patient since April 22. He had been in poor health since the middle of April. Born in Franklin, Ohio, he moved to Battle Creek as a small child. He was machinist for Franklin Electric Co. for 29 years, retiring as supervisor in 1982. He also had been a foreman for 8 years at Clark Equipment and worked for the Battle Creek Packaging Company and the former Duplex Printing Company. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, serving as a private in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and Marians Islands. He was a member of American Legion Oscar Brady Post No. 298, International Association of Machinist, Fred Trost Michigan Outdoors and American Association of Retired Persons. He enjoyed gardening and the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and reader. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons; 1 daughter; 4 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Services will be at 12:00 pm Thursday in Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial donations may go to Battle Creek Fraternal Order of Police, American Legion Oscar Brady Post No. 298 or Salvation Army. Arrangements are by Bachman- Hebble Funeral Service |

Jul 31, 2007 Edna L. Bakkila, aged 94, of Grand Rapids formerly of Battle Creek, the widow of John H. Bakkila, died July 29, 2007. Barbara Wales Leigh March - Battle Creek
Enquirer Barbara, age 67, formerly of Battle Creek, passed away March 14, 2007 in Marietta, GA. She was the beloved wife of Richard Barnum who preceded her in death in 2002. For 20 years prior to moving to Georgia, Barbara was very active in the Calhoun County Community. Over the many years, she worked in various government positions, including that as the Deputy of Calhoun County Elections. Prior to retirement, Barbara worked as Coordinator for the Calhoun County Homeless Clinic. In this position, she found her true passion and spent many tireless hours recruiting volunteers and raising money to ensure that the homeless had adequate medical care, food and shelter. In addition to her public servant work, she was a loyal Democrat who devoted much of her time to local, state and Federal political campaigns and activities; including President Clinton's 1996 visit to Battle Creek. Barbara also served several years as a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 547 Executive Board, and as the Chief Steward for the Calhoun County Public Health Employees. For all of Barbara's selfless acts, in 2001 she received recognition from the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives for all of her efforts on behalf of the homeless. In the same year, she received the Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club. To honor Barbara, friends are invited to join her children in a Celebration of her life and accomplishments on Saturday, July 14, at 11:30 a.m., at the Holiday Inn 12812 Harper Village Drive, Battle Creek. The family requests that any Memorial Contributions be made to the Calhoun County Homeless Clinic. |
Beadle, Alta
M.- Battle Creek Enquirer Alta M. Beadle, 94, of Battle Creek, died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at the Laurels of Bedford. She was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. She was a lifelong resident of Battle Creek, attended Battle Creek Central High School and was employed by the Kellogg Company in the packing department for 25 years. She married Watson G. Beadle on November 15, 1933 in Angola, Indiana, and he passed away in 1988. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. this evening at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. |
Belcher, Marc E.
- Battle Creek Enquirer Marc E. Belcher, 34, of Battle Creek, died July 3, 2007 at his home following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Marc worked for the State of Michigan as a corrections officer at the Robert G. Cotton Corrections Facility, Jackson, MI until three months before his passing.Marc was an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed motor cross, hunting, boating and especially fishing. His love for fishing led him to establish a home based business; "No Limits Fishing Rods," building custom made fishing poles. Marc looked forward every year to his fishing trips to Canada with his dad and sons. Marc was a member of the National Rifle Association and The North American Fishing Association. He was preceded in death by his stepfather and dearest friend Thomas Mansfield on June 29, 2007. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. today at Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2007 at Shaw Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Olmstead, Pleasantview Family Church officiating. Interment Bedford Cemetery. BICKLE, JANE - Battle
Creek Moon, May 26, 1901 Mrs. Jane Bickle, wife of Thomas Bickle, passed away at the White Memorial home at 12:30 o'clock this morning. Nephritas was the cause of death. The deceased has been sick for the past two years and a half. She and her husband came to the home about five years ago from the southern part of Wisconsin Her aged husband survives her. There are no children. The deceased was 80 years old. The funeral will he held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning from the home. Elder McCoy will conduct the services. The internment will made in Oak Hill cemetery. |
BICKLE, THOMAS - The
Morning Enquirer, Sept. 12, 1904 TWO DEATHS Aged Residents of White Memorial Home Passed Away Yesterday. Afternoon. Two deaths occurred at the James White Memorial Home on Aldrich street, since yesterday noon, an inmate of the home Thomas Bickle passing away at 2 oclock-yesterday afternoon, and Mrs. Emiline Briggs, at 5 oclock this morning. Thomas Bickle has been at the home for eleven years. He was eighty-two years of age, passing away from general debility. He was born in England, but has been in this country for 64 years. His wife died at the home four years ago, both of the old people having been there at that time. She is buried at Oak Hill. where Mr. Bickles remains will be laid away. Mrs. Briggs, who passed away this In orning, was the mother of the matron of the home, Mrs. E. A. B. Smith. Some time ago Mrs. Briggs suffered a stroke of paralysis and falling, dislocated her hip and shoulder. She has not been in good health since that time, and finally passed away at the advanced age of 90 years, of general debility. The funeral for both of these old people will be held at the Memorial Home Tuesday morning at 8:00 oclock. Elder мсСоy and Elder Tenney will conduct the services over these old people that the inmates of the home have known and liked for so long. The remains of Mr. Bickle will be buried at Oak Hill and Mrs. Briggs' body will be shipped on Wednesday morning to Quincy, for burial. |
Brew, Maurice - Battle Creek Enquirer
– July 18, 1991 Maurice Brew, 67, of Barnes, Wis. and formerly of Battle Creek,died Sunday, June 9, 1991, in Port Angeles. Wash. Mr. Brew served as a radioman w1th the Army Air Corps. both inDutch Guinea and the Aleutian lslands, during World War ll. In 1945 he applied to the Civil Aeronautics Administration and aftertwo months' training. Mr. and Mrs. Brew relocated to Farewell,Alaska. He worked for the Federal Aeronautics Administration for 31years. moving from Alaska to South Dakota and Minneapolis.where he retired in 1974. He was a member of the Barnes Community Church and Veteransof Foreign Wars Post 8329 in Barnes. He enjoyed golfing and traveling. Also surviving are: his wife; a son; three grandchildren; a brother; and 2 sisters. Services: Held June 20 in Barnes Community Church. Burial: Barnes Cemetery, with military honors. Brockway, James A. - Battle Creek
Enquirer Aug 1, 2007 James A. "Brock" Brockway, 67, of Battle Creek died Sunday, July 29, 2007 surrounded by his loving family at the Battle Creek Health System. He was born in Battle Creek and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. James retired from the Kellogg Company in 1996 after more than 33 years of faithful service. James was preceded in death by a brother, David Brockway. James was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Kellogg 25 Year Club. He cherished his Dark Blue 1934 Ford and enjoyed Antique and Classic cars. James was an avid NASCAR fan; he loved his dog and spending time with his wife and 3 children, of whom he was very proud. At the request of the family, friends may call after 2:00 p.m., today at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where they will be received 2:00 4:00 and 6:00 8:00 p.m. and where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy to celebrate Brock's life will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home with Fr. Joseph Savier of St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiating. Entombment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family asks that friends who wish drive their Classic or Antique cars during the funeral procession. Brown, Elsie Eliza - Battle Creek
Enquirer Ms. Elsie Eliza Brown, 83, of Battle Creek, MI, died August 11, 2007 at Battle Creek Health System in Battle Creek, MI. She was employed at the Ft. Custer State Home then Battle Creek VA Medical Center until retiring in 1978. In retirement she was employed at Big Boy restaurant. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter; a granddaughter; a sister and 4 brothers. She was a former member of the Mt. Zion AME Church. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, bingo and she loved children. Memorial service will be held Friday, August 17, 2007, 1:00 p.m. at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. Burke, Margaret Louise (Mark) - Battle
Creek Enquirer Margaret Louise (Mark) Burke, 92, of Battle Creek died Friday, July 6, 2007, at Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. She graduated from Wadena High School, attended the college of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minnesota, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, where she also did graduate work. Her professional career in Social Work began in Minnesota, and concluded at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. She served in the Red Cross during World War II doing medical social work at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri and Borden General Hospital, Chickasha, Oklahoma. Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved playing golf, Bridge, the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra and she was an avid reader. She enjoyed a good Martini. She was a devout Catholic and a 60-year member of St. Joseph Church, where she was past president of the Altar Society, St. Gerard's Circle; and a past president of the Lawyer's Wives of Calhoun County. She wintered in Cocoa Beach, Florida from 1976-1996. She was predeceased by her husband; her sister; her parents; much loved grandmother and 4 of her beloved aunts, Friends will be received by Margaret's family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9th at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. John D. Fleckenstein at St. Joseph Catholic Church 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007. Following the Mass, Margaret will be cremated. Her cremains will be placed next to her husband at Memorial Park Cemetery, during a service for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. |

Creek Moon, Friday, June 3, 1898 Mrs. Laura Busk, widow of the late George Busk, died at her home, 60 Walters avenue, at about 10 o'clock last night of diabetes, aged 65 years. She leaves two sons and one daughter to mourn her loss. The deceased was an old resident of this city, having lived in the west end thirty years. She was well known and highly esteemed by her many friends. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 from the residence of her son, Edward J. Busk, 57 Walters' avenue. The interment will be in Oak Hill. |

Bussell, James N. - Battle Creek
Enquirer James N. "Jim" Bussell Scotts, MI Went to be with our Lord, Saturday, June 30, 2007. Jim was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan; Jim grew up in Scotts and lived most of his life in the Climax-Scotts area. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era from 1968-1970 and was a member of the Climax American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and great-nephew. Interment of cremains will take place 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 with full military honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Pastor Dennis Veen Kant of Richland, MI will be officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the services at Climax American Legion. Memorial contributions can be made to the Climax American Legion or to the family.
