MAPES, JACK I. - Battle Creek Enquirer Oct. 23, 1986
Jack I. Mapes, of 1267 Avenue A, died Tuesday in Leila Hospital, where he was taken after being stricken at home. He was born in Olivet, served in the U.S. Navy during World War ii and had resided in Battle Creek since 1945. He was employed more than 30 years by the old Michigan Carton Co., and its successors, St. Regis Paper Co. and Michigan Paper Board Board Co., until ill health forced his retirement two and half years ago. He is survived by his wife; 3 sons; two grandchildren; his twin sister; and 4 brothers. Services will at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Contributed by Robin (McNees) Ellis |

JAN. 21, 2011 Madonna Mary Mapes Battle Creek Madonna Mary Mapes, 84, died Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Care Community. She was born December 18, 1926 in Battle Creek, Michigan the daughter of Philip and Mary Bernice (Shanly) Corkins. Madonna was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church, a past member of the Eagles Lodge and enjoyed crocheting. In August of 1946 she was married to Jack Mapes who preceded her in death on October 21, 1986. She was also preceded by her parents, one son: Robert Mapes; one brother: Joseph Corkins and two sisters: Irene Mills and Patricia Chesebro. Surviving are two sons: Thomas (Jean) Mapes of Battle Creek and Kenneth Mapes of Houston, TX; two grandchildren: Heather (D'Wayne) Mott of Spring, TX and Mike (Mindy) Mapes of Battle Creek; four great-grandchildren: Andrew and Vaughn Mott, Jordyn Mapes and Destiny Olds; one sister: Carolyn Hillary of Portland, OR and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 24, 2011, at St. Philip Catholic Church with The Rev. Charles H. Fischer officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m. where the Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Southern Care Hospice, 4341 S. MATHER, LAURA - Battle Creek Daily
Moon, Friday, October 30, 1914 Miss Laura Mather, twenty-five years of age, only daughter of A. W. Mather of Aurora, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, October 28, following an illness of several months. The funeral was held yesterday at the home in Aurora and the body was brought here today, where burial, which was private took place in Oak Hill cemetery. The death is of local interest, since Miss Mather's mother will he remembered as Miss Minnie Green, who was born and lived in Battle Creek until her marriage. The death of Mrs. Mather occurred some few years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Mather of Duluth. Minn., brother of A. W. Mather, attended the burial, and will spend a few days at the Sanitarium before returning to their home. |

Journal, Thursday, September 20, 1883 Mattie Leline, infant daughter of Dr. and Mrs. B. C. McBeth, died last night suddenly after a brief illness. Dr. M. was in Detroit yesterday in attendance upon the National Veterinary association and there received a telegram announcing her death and returned last night. The funeral will occur at the residence No. 2: Jackson street tomorrow at two o'clock p.m., the Rev. Reed Stuart officiating. |

George McCreary Dies - George R. McCreary, age 83 years and a veteran of the Civil War, passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. Mark Lewis, 50 Lafayette Avenue. Monday night at 10:35 o'clock. He leaves to mourn his loss besides the daughter at whose home he died, three grand-children and one half- brother. Funeral services will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. G. E. Wright will officiate and interment made in Harmonia Cemetery. MCINTYRE, FRANKIE - Battle Creek Daily
Moon, Monday, December 13, 1886 Frank, only child of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. McIntyre, aged four years, died of diphtheria at Blue Island, near Chicago, at 12.30 yesterday morning. During the illness of Frank Mrs. McIntyre was prostrated with fever, and her mother, Mrs. A. Latta, of this city, was summoned to the afflicted family two or three days ago. Mr. and Mrs. McIntyre were formerly residents of Battle Creek, and many friends here deeply sympathize with them in their affliction, but are glad to know that the telegram which conveyed the intelligence of the death of Frank also brought the tidings that Mrs. McIntyre was somewhat better. MCKELVEY, LENA - Battle Creek Journal, Page 8, Column 2 LAST SAD RITES OF THE ORPHAN HOME FIRE: Burial Of Victims' Reamains. Memorial services for Lena McKelvey, Cecil Countant and George Goodenow, the three little victims of the recent Haskell Home disaster, were held this (Saturday). Brief addresses were given by Elder L. McCoy, Elder T. C. Tenney, Rev. B. F. Taber and Manager R. S. Owen. The children from the Orphange attended the services. Burial services for the victims were hel Friday afternoon, and burial was in the Haskell Home Cemetery. THE REMAINS OF THE CHILDREN WERE BURIED IN THE HASKELL HOME CEMETERY IN A SINGLE CASKETT FURNISHED BY THE BROTHERS OF LENA MCKELVEY. LENA MCKELVEY was the daughter of JOhnston McKelvey and Hester Demary and was 14 years old when she died in the fire. She had been staying in the Haskell Home temporarily while taking treatments at the Sanitarium for an injured hand. (Drake) McNees, 76, of 21259 Collier Ave. in Bedford Township, who died today in Leila Hospital, where she had been a patient since April 12. Born in Michigan, she came to Battle Creek in 1829 from Bangor. She was the widow of Clifton B. McNees. Surviving are 5 daughters; 6 sons and 34 grandchildren. Blanche W. McNees, 80, of Coldwater died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, in Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility, Coldwater. She was born in Bronson to Willard and Rose (Deeds) Nutt. She was employed by Douglas Manufacturing Co. for several years during World War Il, but was a homemaker most of her life. She married Duward "Dewey" in 1938 in LaGrange, Ind. He died in 1977. Surviving are a son; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. She enjoyed baking, reading, her flower garden and her grandchildren. MCNEES, CLARENCE M. - Battle Creek Enquirer April 8, 1984
Clarence M. McNees ,72, died Friday after arrival at Leila Hospital. He had been hospitalized from March 9 to March 30 and had been in ill health for three years. He was born in Buckley and came to the Battle Creek area in 1928. From 1928 to 1929, he worked at Industrial Rubber Plant in St. Joseph. From 1929 to 1943, he we worked as a coremaker for Union Steam Pump Co. in Battle Creek. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the Navy during World War ll. He saw duty in the Pacific Theater and during the Philippine liberation. He returned to Battle Creek after the war and worked for Union Pump until 1955 He then worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. as a receiving dock clerk until his retirement in 1974. His wife, the former Dorcas M. Stratton, died in March 1980. He is survived by 2 sons; a daughter; 2 stepsons; 1 stepdaughter; 6 brothers; 4 sister; 16 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. A son, David N. McNees, died in July 1983. Services will he at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hebble Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Michigan Heart Association. MCNEES, CLIFFORD ALLEN - Battle Creek Enquirer Feb 8, 1994
Clifford Allen McNees, 72, of Battle Creek died Sunday, Feb, 6. 1994, in Battle Creek Health System/Leila Site after a long illness. He was born in Buckley to Clifton B. and Althea (Drake) McNees. He moved to Bangor at the age of 9 and to Battle Creek in the 1930's. He attended Battle Central High School. Mr. McNees was a welder and iron worker at Reichert Steel before retiring. He also worked for two years in the early 1950's at the Battle Creek Veterans Medical Center and also had a farm on Collier Road for many years. Mr. McNees was a U.S. Army disabled veteran who served in the Cavalry Division from 1938 to 1944. He attended First Baptist Church in Springfield. He enjoyed fishing and, years ago, hunting on his farm. He is survived by his wife; a son; 5 brothers; 3 sisters. He also was preceded in death by a son Dwight Allen McNees, killed in - action in Vietnam, 1969; sisters, Margaret Ryoka and Dorothy Hutchins; and a brother, Clarence M. McNees. Clifton B. McNees, 73, of 22609 Two-Mile (Collier) Rd., retired core maker, died at 4:40 a.m. today in a local hospital where he had been a patient nine days. Mr. McNees, born in McDonald, Mich., was an employee of the Union Pump Co. 36 years, retiring eight years ago. He was one of 12 children of Moses L. and Anne (Hudson) McNees and married Altha May Drake in Buckley, near Traverse City, Aug. 12. 1911. David N. McNees, 44, died Saturday in Leila Hospital. He had been ill three months and hospitalized since Wednesday. He was a lifelong resident of Battle Creek and formerly was employed by several industrial factories in Kalamazoo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and attended the Family Altar Chapel. He is survived by a son; his mother; his father; 2 brothers and a sister. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hebble Funeral Home. Coldwater Durward McNees. 59, was dead on arrival Thursday at the Branch County Community Health Center, where he was taken after being stricken at home. He was born in Kalamazoo and moved to Coldwater in 1942. He was employed by the Consumers Power Co. and retired last September after 30 years of service with the Bronson office. He was a member of the Angola American Legion' Post and the United Commercial Travelers of Coldwater. Duward was preceded in death by a brother Lowell M. McNees in 1961. He is survived by his widow, the former Blanche Nutt; a son; one grandchild; brothers, Stanley and Milford McNees of Kalamazoo, and Howard McNees of South Haven, and sisters, Mrs. Frank (Thelma) Rain, Mrs. Robert (Betty) Slater and Mrs. Dale (Geraldine) Davidson, all of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Al (Ora) Hill of Manistique and Mrs. Mary Hills of Illinois Services will be held at l p.m Saturday at Kubasiak-Kolcs Funeral Home, Bronson. MCNEES, DWIGHT A. - Battle Creek Enquirer April 1969
Spec. 4 Dwight A. McNees, 19, was killed in a combat operation with hostile forces in Vietnam. He was born Battle Creek and attended Highland Junior High School and the Gull Lake Community Schools before enlisting in the Army. He was a member of the Family Altar Chapel, was a former Cub Scout and member of Boy Scout troops 23 and 51. He also was a member of the American Foreign Exchange Student program at Gull Lake school. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a brother, stationed with the Marine Corps in Okinawa. Funeral arrangements are pending at Hebble Funeral Service, Inc. MCNEES, RICHARD L. - Battle Creek Enquirer July 11, 2004
Richard L. McNees, 71 of Bedford Township, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the Battle Creek Veterans Medical Center. Richard was born May 6, 1933 in Battle Creek the son of Clifton & Altha (Drake) McNees. He served in the US Army from 1950-52 and was honorably discharged from the 47th Infantry Division. Richard married the former Patricia A. Corkins in 1958, which ended in divorce. He then married Maxine R. Cooley in 1965 and she preceded him in death May 6, 1992. During the 1960's he owned and operated a service station in Austin, Texas. He then returned to Battle Creek where he was employed at Eaton Manufacturing Company for 14 years retiring in 1982. He was a former member of the VFW and his hobbies included fishing and working in his flower garden. Richard is survived by 5 children, twelve grandchildren, 4 brothers, 1 sister. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Yvonne, Margaret, Dorothy and Valeria and three brothers, Clarence, Clifford and James. At the request of the family, friends may call at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home after 6 PM Saturday where family will be present from 6-8 PM and on Sunday from 4-7 PM. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, July 12, 2004 at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with honors by the Ft. Custer Honor Guard. June 3, 2014 Shawnee, OK Robert "Bobby/Mac" McNees, 55, formerly of Battle creek passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014. He was born February 28, 1955 in Marshall, MI the son of Robert D. and Yvonne McNees. Bobby served in the US Army until his honorable discharge in 1976. He was a maintenance technician for TDK Corporation. He is survived by his parents; his wife; 3 children; 9 grandchildren; and 4 siblings. He was preceded in death by his infant twin grandsons, Taylor and Tyler. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00-8:00 PM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. MILLS, CLIFFORD DONALD - Battle Creek Enquirer
NOV. 30, 2010 Clifford D Mills Battle Creek Clifford D. Mills, age 83 died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 in Kalamazoo where he had lived since 2005. Mr. Mills was born on October 18, 1927 to Lawrence and Doris (Bueker) Mills, and attended Battle Creek Schools. He was good with his hands, and he worked in maintenance. Mr. Mills later worked as a handyman in his own business in Battle Creek. as a young man Mr. Mills served in the U.S. Army where he received a honorable discharge. After retiring he enjoyed working many years as a Crossing Guard for the Public Schools in Battle Creek. He liked working on cars, puttering in his basement workshop, singing, fishing, camping and his dogs. Mr. Mills is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years Irene (Corkins) 8 years ago; and by his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughters: Carol (Dave) Bailey of Kalamazoo, Cathy (Steve) Saxman of Battle Creek, Mary (Mike) Humphreys of Battle Creek, Linda Burch of Davenport, Iowa; his son John Mills of Springfield, Tennessee; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren of whom he was especially fond of in his later years; and his special and appreciated friend Karen Wanamaker of Kalamazoo. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 15, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Kalamazoo, services to follow at 12:30 p.m. with Pastor John Vick officiating. JAN. 9, 2004 Irene V. (Corkins) Mills, 69, of Battle Creek, died Monday, January 6, 2003 at her home. She was born May 25, 1933 in Battle Creek to Philip & Mary B. (Shanley) Corkins. She attended Battle Creek Public Schools, and was a Caregiver at Adult Foster Care Homes and a home health aid retiring in the mid 1990's. On April 11, 1959, she married Clifford D. Mills. He survives. Also surviving are a son, John Mills of Rock Spring, GA, 4 daughters, Mary (Michael) Humphreys of Hastings, MI, Cathy (Steve) Saxman of Battle Creek, Linda Burch of Chattanooga, TN, and Carolyn (Don) Simpson of Kalamazoo, MI, 2 sisters, Madonna Mapes of Battle Creek and Carolyn Hillary of Lake Elsinore, CA, 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Corkins and a sister, Patricia Chesebro. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, baking, watching TV, and movies. Visitation will be held from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday, January 3, 1888 Mrs. Ann Millsom died at the residence of her son, Thomas Millsom, No. 196 Lydia street, on Saturday evening last, of pleuro-pneumonia, aged 77 years. Deceased lived in Homer, and had arrived the Saturday before to spend the holidays with her son and family. She was taken sick on Friday and died Saturday as related. The remains were interred in Oak Hill cemetery this afternoon. |

Moon, Wednesday, March 28, 1888 A BRAKEMAN KILLED A telegram was received by William Milne this afternoon from C. P. Waldo, Superintendent of the Wisconsin Central Road, whose headquarters are at Stevens Point, Wis., announcing the death of his brother, George Milne, a brakeman, which occurred last night. Deceased was a young man, who had just reached his majority, and was especially popular among his friends and colaborers. When he worked on the C. & G.T. in this city , he braked for Conductor O. E. Clark. His remains will be brought to this city for interment. |

Moon, Friday, November 22, 1889 George H. Moore died last night at his residence, on Hazel street, of diabetes, aged twenty-six years. Deceased was a brother of E. W. Moore of the Journal office, and had been a resident of the city about two years. He leaves a wife and three small children to mourn his loss. The funeral will occur on Sunday, but the hour has not been decided upon. |
