CALKINS, ERNEST LEE - Cadillac News Aug. 15, 2001
Ernest Lee Calkins of Reed City died Tuesday Aug. 14, 2001 at his home. He was 44. Mr. Calkins had lived in Battle Creek, Mount Pleasant and Evart before moving to Reed City. He had been employed at MOARC in Paris, MI, for more than 15 years. He enjoyed collecting books, doing line drawing and puzzles. He is survived by his Father and Step-Mother, 4 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 half- sister, six nieces and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1969 and half-sister, Janna L. Calkins in 1972. Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with Pastors J. Fred Calkins and Quentin Purvis officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Township Cemetery, Osceola County. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial tributes may be made to the Cadillac Seventh Day Adventist Church. Patricia Ann (Corkins) Chesebro, 46, died Wednesday at her residence at 744 E. Michigan Ave. Born in Battle Creek, she was a lifelong resident and homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Benjamin Chesebro, unknown address, 2 daughters, one grandchild and three sisters. NOTE: My Mother. Proceded in death by a brother Joseph Corkins; her mother Mary B. CHURCH, ELIZABETH HELEN (TRAYNOR) - Battle Creek Newspaper Jul. 8, 1962
PAST RESIDENT DIES, MARRIED A NOBLEMAN A native of Battle Creek woman who became a member of England's nobility, Lady Elizabeth Helen Church, about 77, wife of Sir Jeoffrey Selby Church, a brigadier General in the British Army, died last Sunday in Hatfieldshire, Hertz, England. She had been in ill health and bed-ridden in recent months. Lady Church was on of 10 children of John Luke and Mary (Whalen) Traynor. After attending St. Phillip School here, she studied abroad. During World War 1 she was with the British Intelligence Service and met Sir Jeoffrey. They were married March 3, 1920. She was later presented at the Court of St. James. In addition to their manor house at Hatfieldshire, the Churches maintained a summer home at the resort of Brighton and an apartment in London. Sir Jeoffrey is a graduate of Oxford Universty and served in the British Army in both Wars. Lady Church was an Aunt of Mrs. Anna Sanford Snell of 123 North Ave.; Mrs. Forrest G. (Josephine) Fee of Detroit; Mrs. James (Blanche) Dunn of 212 Cherry St., Mrs. Jessie Finley of 41 Tennyson Ave.; Mrs. Roy (Catherine) Sissen of 131 W. CONINE, GEORGE - Battle Creek Enquirer Dec. 18, 1973
Athens George L. Conine, 84, died Monday in Community Hospital in Battle Creek after a six month illness. Conine was born Leonidas and died one day after his 84th birthday. He lived in Athens for 39 years. He retired in 1954 from Union Pump Co. In Battle Creek he was a carpenter for 28 Years, he was also a farmer. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War 1. He married to the former Melissa McNees in 1914, she died in 1969. After his retirement, he dug a private trout lake and built dune buggies and traveled to many dune buggie events. He is survived by 4 daughters, 6 sons, 26 grandchildren, six great grand children, 1 sister and 1 brother. Services will be held at 1:30 pm Thursday at Spencer Funeral Home. George L. Conine, 80, of Athens died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Battle Creek Health System. He was born in Buckley to George and Melissa (McNees). He moved to Battle Creek in 1930 with his family and then moved to Athens in 1937. He was a farmer. He is survived by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He was proceded in death by brothers Roland Conine and Harold L. Conine both in 1996; and sisters Viola Conine in 1921, Leona L. Mead in 1998 and Betty J. Vincent in 1997. He enjoyed tractor pulls, 4 wheel drive sports, camping, traveling, swimming in his pond, landscaping, lawn tractors and breakfast outings on Sundays. Visitation will be 4pm to 8pm Sunday and Monday at Spencer Funeral Home where the family will be present. Services will be at 1:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Roland Conine, 71, of Athens, died Sunday, March 17, 1996, at home after along illness. He was born in Bangor to George L and Melissa Adeline (McNees) Conine and moved to Athens with his family as a child. He was a farmer. He also worked on cars and was a mud racer. Races on his father's farm drew participants from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Canada and Michigan. he also was a stock car owner and mechanic. Surviving are: his wife: a son: 2 daughters: 11 grandchildren: 12 great- grandchildren: 4 brothers and 4 sisters. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harald L Conine on Jan. 24,1996: and a sister: Viola Conine. He enjoyed old tractors and attending tractor pulls. Was a member of the Michigan Sports Buggy Association. Visitation will be Spencers Funeral Home, Athens from 6 - 8 pm today. Services will be Wednesday at 1:00 at the Funeral home with Rev. Frederick Corkins, 72, of 542 Bedford Road, died in a local hospital at 10 a.m. Monday after an illness of four months. He was a resident of Battle Creek for 35 years and a carpenter employed at various times by Grand Trunck Railroad, Bennett Oven Co. and the A-B Stoves, Inc. Mr. Corkins was born Dec. 29, 1872, in Wayland, the son of Chester and Mary Corkins. He is survivied by seven sons and three daughters: Vernon N. of Seattle, Wash., Roy of 79 Clark, Phillip W. of 554 Bedford Road, Lloyd A. of 570 Bedford Road, Corp. Edward Theodore, now in the Phillippines, William R. of 120 Robinwood, Gilbert J. of 436 North Twenty-Second Street, Mrs. Clyde (Mary G.) Whaley of 62 Pittee, Mrs. Dale (Olive) VanOrder, of the Waubascon Road, and Mrs. Ralph (Isabelle) Peterson of 119 Arlington. Gilbert J. Corkins, 74, of Nashville, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1993, in Battle Creek Health System/Lelia Site. He was born April 7, 1919, in Battle Creek to Fredrick and Jeanette (Wheat) Corkins. He attended Battle Creek Central High School. He was employed at Eaton Corp. and A-B Stove Co. in Battle Creek and retired from E. W. Bliss Co. in Hastings in 1981 after 30 years of service. He was a member and past master of Nashville Masonic Lodge 255, F&A.M., and Royal Arch Masons, Zion Chapter, Nashville. he was a former member of the Dad's Club of the Nashville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He attended Vermontville Bible Church and was a member of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Silver Springs, Fla. where he and his wife had spent their winters the past 12 years. He married the former Huldey A. Van Alstine in Battle Creek on June 6, 1942. They spent most of their married life in Nashville. She survives. Mr. Corkins enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and his family. Also surviving are a son Frederick R., of Vermontville, and a daughter, Judith Jenkins of Elkhart, Ind.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Olive Van Order of Battle Creek. He was proceeded in death by isx brothers and two sisters. Services: 3 p.m. today at the Maple Valley Chapel-Genther Funeral Home, Nashville, with the Rev. Joseph William Corkins, 49, of 27 Bond Ave., died Sunday in Leila Hospital, where he had been a patient since March 12. He had been ill five years. He was born in Battle Creek and was employed for 29 years by the former Michigan Carton Co., retiring in 1974. He was a member of Eagle Lodge 299, and had been active in the baseball leagues in the Battle Creek Civic Recreation Department. He attened St. Phillip Catholic Church. Surviving are his widow, the former Constance Shanley (should say the former Constance THURSTON); sons Phillip Corkins of Texas and Joseph W. of Battle Creek; a daughter Joan Corkins of Battle Creek; his mther Mary Bernice Corkins of 554 Bedford Road; step sons Donald L. Thurston of Orange Park, Fla., and Phillip H. Thurston Jr.; step daughters Mrs. Richard (Terry Ann) Brown, Mrs. Christine Frye and Miss L. Lloyd A. Corkins, 76, of 20100 Bedford Road, died Sunday in Leila Hospital, where he had been a patient 11 days. He had been ill two years. He was born in Grand Rapids and moved to Battle Creek. He was employed by Ralston Purina Co. for 18 years and 27 years by the Battle Creek Packaging Machines Co. as field engineer and final inspector, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the Ceral City Citizen Radio Club, and the 20th Street Church of Christ. He formerly was active as a volunteer in Boy Scouts and Cun Scouts and was an active bowler in several leagues. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Irene Sutherland, a son, Alfred W. Corkins of Battle Creek; daughter, Marilyn L. Hall and Glenna M. McNeil of Pontiac; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, sisters Olive Van Order and June I. Peterson both of Battle Creek; and brothers William Corkins of Lacy, and Gilbert Corkins of Nashville. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Royal Funeral Home. Margaret Helen Corkins, five months-old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Philip Corkins, route seven died at 11 p.m. Friday at the home of her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs John Shanley, 34 Peninsular. She is survived by a brother and one sister and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. F. Corkins, Bedford Road. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the home of the grandparents, in charge of the Rev. Fr, David L. Dillon with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. She was employed by Ralston Purina Co. for 23 years, retiring in 1965 and she attended Fundamental Baptist Church. He first marriage to Dale E. Reed ended in divorce, and her second husband, Philip Corkins, died in 1967. She also was proceded in death by a son, Donald E. Reed, in 1973, and by a daughter, Eleanor Weeder, in 1985. She is survived by daughters Barbara Brown and JoAnn Willavize, both of Battle Creek; a son Richard D. Reed; 19, grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Fay Reick. Mary B. (Shanley) Corkins, 73 of 554 N. Bedford Road, died Wednesday in Leila Hospital, where she had been a patient since July 29. She had been ill four years. She was born in Battle Creek and was a lifelong resident of the city. She was employed for more than 30 years as an inspector at the former Michigan Carton Co. before retiring in 1972. Mrs. Corkins was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church and the auxiliaries to Eagles Aerie 299 and Eferd Lynn Chapter 7, Disabled American Veterans. Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Jack (Madonna) Mapes of 1267 Avenue A, Mrs. Clifford (Irene) Mills of 554 N. Bedford Road, Mrs. Patricia Corkins of 127 Green St. and Mrs. Carolyn Hillary of San Diego; 16 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Sass of 290 Honey Lane. Mrs. Olive J. Corkins,73, widow of Frederick Corkins, died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday in her residence at 542 Bedford Road after an illness of three years. She was born in Cedar Valley, OH., Dec. 13, 1876, a daughter of William and Sarah (Cobb) Wheat. While she was an infant her family moved to Grand Rapids where she married to Mr. Corkins in 1903. They came to Battle Creek in 1909. Mr. Corkins died here Jan. 1, 1945. Mrs. Corkins is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mary G. Philip Walter Corkins, 63, of 26 Sylvan Ave, head machine repairman at the local Ralston Purina Co., plant, where he had been employed about 45 years, died unexpectedly at 6:10 a.m. today at a local hospital. He had entered the hospital Monday. Mr. Corkins was a member of Bedford Lodge, No. 207, F&A.M. and of the Grain Millers Union. he had been active in Boy Scout work and was a former scout master of Bedford Troop 40. He was born May 14, 1904, in Grand Rapids, a son of Frederick and Olive J. (Wheat) Corkins. The former Marian E. Carpenter Reed, to whom he was married June 25, 1945, at Angloa, Ind. survives. Mr. Corkins' other survivors include five children from an earlier marriage, Joseph W. of 153 E. Goodale Ave., Mr.s Jack (Madonna) Mapes of 240 Battle Creek Ave., Mrs. Clifford (Irene) Mills of Grove Street, Mrs. Patricia McNees of 240 Battle Creek Ave. and mrs. Roy E. Corkins, 77, died Wednesday in Riverside Manor, where he had been a patient since last October. He was born in Delton and had resided in the Battle Creek area most of his life. He was employed by Kellogg Co. for more than 25 years, retiring in 1965. He was a memebr of the Kellogg 25-Year Club and was an Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, the former Bessie Simon, also a patient at Riverside Manor; a son, Gerald Corkins of Red Hook, N. Corkins, 72, of 1165 North Ave, died Saturday morning, March 11, in Borchess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, where he ahd been a patient for one week. he had been ill about three years. He was born in Battle Creek and lived in the area all his life. He had been employed many years ago with the former A.B. Stove Co., and Ralston Purina and 29 years at Post Cereals retiring in 1978. He was a founding member of Pleasantview Family Church and was a member of the Post 25 Club, a past master and member of Bedford Masonic Lodge, F.&A.M. He was active for 35 years with the Boy Scouts, and was a past scout master and a district representative. He was on the first Board of Education for Pleasantview Schools. Surviving are his wife, the former Martha J. Wallace; 2 Sons, 3 Daughters, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a brother Gilbert J. Corkins; and sisters OLive Van Order and Isabelle Peterson, both of Battle Creek. A son, Theodore R. Corkins died in 1947. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasantview Family Church. 2 LAST SAD RITES OF THE ORPHAN HOME FIRE: Burial of Victims' Remains. Memorial services for Lena McClavney, Cecil Coutant and George Goodenow, the three little victims of the recent Haskell Home disaster, were held this (Saturday). Brief addresses were given by Elder L. McCoy, Elder T. C. Tenney, Rev. B. F. Taber and Manager R. S. Owen. The children from the Orphange attended the services. Burial services for the victims were hel Friday afternoon, and burial was in the Haskell Home Cemetery. FROM THE PAGE TITLED VICTIMS OF THE HASKELL HOME FIRE (WILLARD LIBRARY, BATTLE CREEK, MI): TWO GIRLS AND ONE BOY LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE EARLY MORNING FIRE THAT DESTROYED THE HASKELL HOME ON FEBRUARY 5, 1909. THE GIRLS WERE CECIL COUTANT AND LENA MCKELVEY. THE BOY WAS GEORGE GOODENOW. THE REMAINS OF THE CHILDREN WERE BURIED IN THE HASKELL HOME CEMETERY IN A SINGLE CASKETT FURNISHED BY THE BROTHERS OF LENA MCKELVEY. CECIL COUTANT was 12 years olds when she died.
