BUCKELEW, HAMPSHIRE posted by John R. Adams on Tuesday, January 13, 1998

I have just found out about the GenWeb project this evening. I have many places of interest, but the heart of most of my research is in Ionia County. For the past several years I have been searching for the parents of Charles David Hampshire. He and his wife, Christina Buckelew Hampshire are burried in Balcom Cemetary. If you look around in Balcom, as I am sure you have, you will find many Hampshires. I have just recently succeded in finding Charles' ancestors back to 1756 and the emmigrant ancestor. Further research will require European assistance. However, I am going to try to reconstruct the descendant of Charles and all of his 9 brothers and sisters. Most of them ended up in Ionia County around the 1930's or a little earlier. I have information about Lowdens and Gaffney's as well. They have all been in Ionia County for eons.

HOPKINS, MESSER posted by Vernon Hall on Tuesday, January 13, 1998

My Grandmother, Eleanora Hopkins, Nee Hopkins, was married to William Hopkins, when she passed away in 1963. She was born 1892 in Conneaut or State Line, Ohio. William was a distant cousin (3,4,5th) . There were many relatives in the Ionia, Belding area. I am her grandson and was named after her brother Vernon who was a state trooper. Another brother was named Gaylord. Many of her descendants are today living in northeast Ohio. She had at least 7 children. All in Ohio. I remember seeing our Michigan relatives last in 1963 just before she died. I remember because I was in the Navy and while in Belding, The USS Thresher went down with all hands, this was near Easter in April that year. would be interested in any material that may relate. Or even contact with anyone who would be acquainted with her and her mother's last years. Her Mother's last name was Messer. She passed away around the same time. She was living in a nursing home south of Belding. William Hopkins outlived Eleanora and I have no knowledge of when he died, he was in his late 70's maybe early 80's in 1963, a rather large robust man. Used to be a lumberjack in UP in early part of century. Would appreciate any help. Also looking for a Messer who died in 1963-65(?) near 100 years old, she is my ggm and is the mother of my gm Hopkins. There is a remote possibility that the surname may have been Landmesser. Thanks again! Vern Hall

FROST, PAXSON posted by Elaine Bennett-Sharp on Tuesday, January 13, 1998

I am interested in finding information about the Frost surname in Ionia Co. My great-aunt, Leola (Paxson) Frost was married to Maxie Frost. He died not long after they were married, many years before I was born. I was told that he was a builder, and that he had built the home in Dearborn where my "Aunt Leola" lived. She died in 1970, at age 71, I think, and is buried in Belding, though I do not know the name of the cemetery. I basically know nothing about her husband's family, and am curious about his background. I'm afraid there is no one left in my family who can tell me any more details about my great-uncle Maxie Frost. If my memory serves correctly, the houses in Dearborn, MI were built about 1930, and I believe that is about when he and Leola were married. I do not know what year he died. I recall that Maxie had a brother who was an attorney or insurance man, but I do not know his name. Yes, Maxie and Leola lived in Dearborn, but his family roots must have been in Ionia County, or else it makes no sense for them to be buried clear over in Belding, as they are.

DAVID posted by Robert Frei on Tuesday, January 13, 1998

My David family genealogy is still growing. I have identified a few hundred more descendents, and may soon be able to tie in all of the "loose DAVIDs" who turned up in Ionia and surrounding counties to whom I have not yet made a connection. I would like to post a query specifically asking for anyone who knows about: 1. The family of the Ionia County Commissioner, Lewis C. David, who died in Ionia in 1929 (his father was James David of New York) 2. The family of Belinda David, who married James Burnes and lived in Ionia and/or Ingham Counties in the mid 1800's. 3. The family of Edwin A. David, who was reported to be a farmer in section 19 of Portland Twp. in the 1872 Ionia County directory. These are the loose ends I still have in the area. If anyone can shed light on them I would be most appreciative. Thanx

BELEN, FANDEL, GELLER, NOEKER posted by Gene Cramer on Thursday, January 15, 1998

Peter FANDEL and Mary Ann BELEN come to America Peter FANDEL and his wife Mary Ann Belen Fandel owned and operated a farm in the Moselle Valley region of western Germany. The exact location of their farm we do not know but we recall references to nearby citeis as we listened to conversations between Mother and Grandmother. These were the places mentioned: Sarre, Sarrbourg, Koblenz, and Trier -- but we know the nearest village was, at that time, Wachsweiler. Both Grandfather Peter and Grandmother Mary Ann were born in 1825. After the birth of three of their children (Carl, Angeline, and Chris ) , they made the decision  to come to America and make a home there in 1865 . The little group consisting of Grandfather, Grandmother, and their three children, and brother John Fandel, sister Gertrude Fandel, and a niece whose name I do not know left Germany forever. They loaded their belongings  on  carts which they pushed the distance to Antwerp.  It was a distance of less than 200 miles, and we have no details of how the trip was arranged. After three or four years of tenant farming Grandfather bought a farm in Livingston County near Parshallville.  Later in order to be near relatives, he sold this farm and bought one in Fowler Michigan -- and it was there in December of 1899 that Grandmother died.  A little later Grandfather came to live with us in Wacousta and for several years he was one of our family.  He died August 10, 1912. Both he and Grandmnother are buried in  Holy Trinity Cemetary in Fowler Michingan. After coming to America two daughters were born, both during the residence in Parschalville. They were Elizabeth Fandel NOEKER and Anna Fandel GELLER.

CRAMER, FANDEL, VERNER, WERNER posted by Gene Cramer on Thursday, January 15, 1998

I am searching for Robert CRAMER, a Lutheran born at Westpreisen Muhlen or Westprussian Mills or Westpreussen Muhlen. This is what I know from his obituary: Robert H. CRAMER was born 5 November 1851 at West Prussian Mills [Westpreisen Mills] of which his father was owner in what was then Germany. He came to America in the spring of 1866 (1868) alone, a friend having started with him , but on arriving at the seaport backed out, and so far as he knows none of his relatives have ever came here. When he left home had some extra money for use when he arrived, which was for safekeeping sewed inside his coat but before reaching New York someone had managed to extract it undiscovered and he landed in New York without a cent, and unable to speak a word, except in his own language. He soon found work and after a time went to Allegheny, Pennsylvania and later to Michigan where he found work in a sawmill. He had learned the milling business of his father at home, and after learning the language sufficiently, soon found employment at his trade. He had charge of the water mills at Portland Michigan for several years, competing for some time successfully with the other mills with improved machinery. He died in Portland Michigan on 14 June 1901.    He was an upright and consistent Christian in the true sense of the word, an active member of the Roman Catholic Church in Portland, where his remains were conveyed on Monday morning, June 17, accompanied by sympathizing friends and neighbors, and after the usual services were observed, his body was laid to rest in the Catholic grounds there.  Obituary  published The Clinton Republican  20 June 1901  page 8 column 2   He married Angeline FANDEL of Fowler Michigan; they had 11 children (4 males and 7 females).  Two males and 1 female went to Oklahoma; I am a descendant of one.  Males Charles and Robert stayed in Michigan. A family letter shows that Robert's father had died while he was was still quite young. Some time later his mother remarried. Possibly at this time Robert departed for USA. This second husband, a widower with several children, was a Mr. WERNER or VERNER, a schoolmaster. A family photograph, taken about 1880, shows Robert's mother and her second husband. The photographer's name was H. Wittman and he was located at Deutsche-Krone or Dt.-Krone. I am Robert CRAMER's great grandson. I have tried several books and maps, but Westpreisen Muhlen must have been a small place, not a city. Attempts to reach Michigan relatives have been unsuccessful. I give much material just so you see some context.

GG-Grandparents Silvester (or Sylvester) and Sarah (Pound) ST.JOHN came to Ionia about 1860 from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. We think all their five sons and three of their four daughters came with them (oldest daughter, Mary, married and remained in Canada). We don't know when or where Silvester died; however, believe Sarah died in or near Ionia, December 10, 1888, though have not been able to verify this (I've checked through the cemetery info here). Sylvester and Sarah's children are: Mary E.; Emily J.; James Nelson; Eliza R.; George Andrew; Sarah; Albert Culmer; Robert; Sydney.
